95 K1100lt Wont start
« on: October 03, 2017, 05:08:50 PM »
The bike was parked for nearly 2 years.  I Just replaced the battery, drained old gas, added a gallon of fresh, and the bike wont start.  When the key is turned on lights work, bike cranks, no start.  Checked the plugs they look good are bone dry and spark.  I normally hear the fuel pump when the key is turned on, i currently do not hear the pump.  I removed a fuel line from the fuel rail, and cranked - no fuel.

Before being parked bike always ran flawlessly and started easily, I've cleaned and reseated the Motronic connector and the 4 pin connector to the tank, all the fuses are good.  Where do I look next?

On Further investigation it sounds like when the key is on, side stand up, there is a slight "thud" coming from inside the tank when I cycle the kill switch on and off (each time switch is moved to center position the "thud" can be heard)

Sounds like your fuel pump might be seized. Can you check voltage at the pump, to verify your relay and tank connector is good.
I have heard of other removing the pump and soaking it in some techron, the carefully, applying power to the pump forward and then reversed to break the internals loose.

The other alternative is a replacement pump. There are option listed in the "alternative parts" sticky posting.

Resolved.

Apparently just having fresh gas in the tank for a couple of days was enough to desolve the deposits that had the pump seized. Turned the key on this morning and the pump struggled to life, but was soon running normally. Hooked it all back up and it started instantly and is running strong

Now's the time for Techron, Techron, and more Techron... a new fuel filter and careful fuel line inspection would also be good ideas.

Keep the revs up and get in as much yeehaa as possible. :riding:

Soaking in white vinegar for a week or two will often revive old pumps. Also applying short burst of 12v and reversing the polarity back and forth can break them free. For one particular frozen pump a mate applied 18v briefly, switching the polarity and it broke free. After doing this a good flushing with petrol should get rid of most if not all of the crap out of the pump.
