Radio code

I want to enter the radio code on my K1100 LT. But when I switch it on the display just shows four 9999's. One is a small figure 9 with the other three being larger figure nines.


I have tried the following


1. Holding the ST button down when switching on for over 30 secs
2. Holding the Band button down when switching it on for over 30 secs


 Nothing happens. Still the four 9999's displayed.


Anyone had this problem and found the solution?

that is what happens when you pull the #5 fuse out of sequence... it should be #8 fuse then #5 fuse...

you are going to have to buy a new radio cassette deck from bmw... the few new old stock units left in existence come with a scorpions  cassette preloaded...

It's been quite awhile since I have erased the wrong code and entered the correct code for my radio.  I don't recall that you had to be holding the button down when turning on the power.  Try turning on the power and than holding the ST or Band button afterwards.  I don't recall which one it is.

Thanks for the link to the manual scott. However there is nothing in it that explains what the 9999 displayed could mean. And johnny's explanation of fuse sequence removal makes no sense to me? Wouldn't some warning of that exist in the manual if it meant damaging the radio?. Her indoors is now on the case and has email contact with clarion at sales europe who kindly provided a code. She will email him back on what this 9999 could mean and if it can be sorted

In the manual it tells how to erase an incorrect code. BTW, an incorrect code will stay on the display until it is erased.
To erase(if it will at least...) with the radio on and the code displayed, press and hold the band button until it disappears, at which point you can enter the correct code.

As far as what Johnny was saying about the fuses.... The radio uses 2 power inputs. Normal operating power(switched with the ignition switch) is on fuse #8- remove it 1st, keep it out. The radio memory is powered from fuse #5 - remove it 2nd.  Install in reverse order.

Electrically speaking, if you have the key switch in the OFF or PARK,(not R or ON) there is no power to fuse #8 anyway, so go ahead and remove #5 to remove power.

Many thanks to Kioolt and scott for the above help :clap:  I now have the radio cassette working! By turning the power on FIRST then holding the st button cleared four 9999's and I was able to enter the correct code. I had made the mistake (upon advice) of holding the st or band button down BEFORE switching on. Thanks guys :2thumbup:


All I need do now is find the wiring short that is stopping the rear speakers from working in the pillion passengers back rest :mbird

I assume the fader you mention is the black rubber knob that balances the sound/volume between front and left speakers? I have adjusted it and find that there is a problem with the cabling on one rear speaker. There is no juice to that speaker. The other rear speaker has a weak tinny sound. That is when the balance/fader knob is turned fully counter clockwise. Both rear speakers work because I have tested them on the one good rear cable. That balance/fader switch looks mighty complicated :dunno could that be at fault by not giving the full signal? Or is the culprit a short somewhere? I have good sound coming from the front speakers with the balance/fader knob centrally positioned[size=78%] [/size]

If you are getting good sound from the front, both left and right, and not at the back,(and your sure the back speakers are good) then all that is left is either the fader assy, or a broken wire/bad connection.

Try spraying the fader switch with Deoxit first.
