"Routine Maintenance"
« on: July 01, 2017, 04:38:54 PM »
Well my routine maintenance of replacing all oils, spline lube, rear brake pads and filters has become a bit more complicated.

I checked the valve clearance and found cylinders #1 and #2 exhaust at .10 and .20 respectively.  Using Ken's great tool to remove the shims I see the stamped size has worn off so now it's time to get a good micrometer to figure out what I need.

It has been about 30k since checking these on my 75k machine and although it seemed to be running great there was that nagging in my head that I need to check the valves after reading about Tim's problem.

I've read here that there are many who never have to change a thing while others have to keep up with the clearance check.

After determining the sizes I need another order to Bob's or Max will be in order.

It seems to make a difference on how the bike has been run. According to local expert, German autobahn run bikes require more adjustment, whereas bikes in OZ with lower speed limits require less frequent adjustment. I've only had to adjust mine once and that was at 140,000 k's, two valves adjusted .025 mm. Coming up to my 160,000 k service and will check them but I'm not expecting to  have to adjust them. I've got a local motorcycle shop that will swap them or a local BM wrecker. Even though I've experience very little wear I still wont go more than 20,000 k without checking. I also check rear splines at 20,000 k intervals.
Regards Martin.

Thanks Martin.

That's interesting and after this discovery I will put this check on the 20k check.

I've taken a couple of 4500 mile trips and generally use this as my "commuter mule" because of the ABS and very comfortable riding position.

I am interested to know what wears causing this.
