K75 Necessary Base Amps
« on: August 04, 2013, 08:23:47 PM »
How many amps does a bare bones K75 require from the alternator to run without draining the battery?

I'm trying to calculate how close I am to reaching the 32 amp limit my alternator can provide using know values from the lighting and accessories I have on my bike.

Fortunately my accessory lighting is LED (4 amp total) but I've also got a couple of USB draws and occasionally a 5 amp heated vest.

Hi Tim,

I don't have any hard numbers or anything.  But on my '90 K75, with the same 35w alternator, I could run both my vest and (factory) electric grips simultaneously for hours without any noticeable problems with the battery.

No, I am not cool.  Yes, it really is the journey.

The bulbs would be easy to do the math on. It's the pump and engine management components you need to figure out.

Got a VOM? Many can handle a 10amp draw on the current settings. On my bike the power going to the fues box is on a separate lead then the power for the starter so you shouldn't have a problem hooking it up. I'd say 10amp would be plenty to run the bike and lights.

Thanks. It sounds like I probably don't have anything to worry about.

..Certainly nothing on a USB cable is liable to cause you any concern. Very little current draw is even possible on that protocol. In general, K-bikes have simply oodles of electrical capacity compared to Airheads. Worry not, old bean. :euro
