New (used) driveshaft on it's way/Questions
« on: September 05, 2012, 09:54:06 AM »
Because I had a front u joint failure last week on the K1100RS at 80k, I've sourced a driveshaft from an RS with 30k. It's being shipped to me. A new shaft from BMW at $700 plus wasn't an option.
Questions:

* Has anyone found a source or procedure for removing the "lube for life" staked in place u joints and replacing them? I know that a company called Rockford makes u joints that are designed to replace staked u joints but I don't know if they offer a part that's the right size. All the applications they list on their site are automobile based.

* Does anyone know of a way to just remove and disassemble the u joint for cleaning/inspection/regreasing?

What I don't want is to get the new driveshaft in and have this happen again in a month.

Thanks,
Charlie

There are vague rumors about people replacing U joints but nothing concrete. I think Bruno's
in Canada would replace them for big $$. The problem is many are in crooked from the factory
and so require machining to correct them before a new one can be installed. I bought a 9K
driveshaft on EBay and the U joint on it is bad so I'm looking for the same. I might try a
automotive driveline specialist as they sometimes replace swagged in U joints.

I guess German engineering/QC isn't what it used to be.

Bruno is German. His quality is fantastic. Rebuilding the whole lot on a k75 was about ~800 dollars, including a new FD bearing, U joint, Pinion gear splines, Shaft Splines (All made to aircraft tolerance with 65 rWc hardness) and about an inch of extra spline meat.

Just email him. should be pretty reasonable. or take it to a car machine shop and see what they can do.
