Where Does This Ground Wire Connect

Putting the bike back together. Almost complete after three loooong days of nitrile gloves.

This electrical connector comes down from under the tank towards the battery / starter area and is grounded even though the jacket is red.

Where might I connect it?

There is an earth connection on thr gearbox just above the coils.  Socket head screw 6mm thread and 5mm hex. There are usually more than one eth connected there.

I found this photo too (not my bike) that shows it connects to the same place as the battery ground.

This small spring is the only part left over from my clutch rebuild. I thought it came off the side stand / center stand, but for the life of me I can't see where.

It looks like the rear brake pedal spring.

My bike has only one wire on that ground point, it is a smaller wire and goes
straight to the battery. Maybe 50 amp bikes have a bigger wire too?

Yeah - I did that.

I have two each of the #13's and the #7's and they're all considerably thicker and twice as long as this little leftover spring.

I had the same problem 2 years ago after doing my first spline job.  Same little spring left over with no obvious place to go.  And I posted the same question you had...."Where does this left over spring go?"  As Randy said, it's the brake lever spring.  One end goes between the #7 springs on your center stand and the other end attaches to a spot near your MC.  Good luck.

Later K's (don't know what year, it's probably documented in here somewhere), have a bigger ground wire. Mine is an 87 and the factory wire is almost scary thin.
Euro Moto Electrics has a nice kit with upgraded battery wiring. You can roll your own too, of course. I found however, that the euromotoelectrics kit was very cost effective compared to a DIY effort.
