K75 basketcase, what needs to be plugged in to start?
« on: April 17, 2020, 01:22:47 PM »
Hey all, names Tyler, this is my first post, I apologize that its a question.

Picked up a basketcase 91 K75S yesterday as a Coronavirus project.  Everything is there except the front and rear fairings, so no taillight, headlight, turn signals or horn.

Question is what needs to be there other than the battery, gauges, ignition, starter and computer? Do I need to terminate or short those other things, I’ve looked all over but cant find the answer.  I am cleaning the ignition switch now but hoping to try to start,

right now with the battery hooked up I only have a clock.

Dont work on a lot of bikes with computers and this is my first bmw,  appreciate any help

check the inside of the tank for dissolved fuel pump mounting and make sure the gas is fresh.  Sounds like everything is there you need to start, ignition and kill switch good place to start.

Battey is brand new reading 12.7, cost more than the bike.  Have the ignition switch apart for cleaning and then over to the kill switch, took out the starter and cleaned it.  Took off the tank and cleaned it.  Removed all grounds and cleaned them and their mounting points.   Hoping the ignition and kill gets me something more than a clock.  Thanks guys, I’ll try to get some pics up later.

Welcome!  First, a fully charged battery should show at least 12.8 volts.

Second, a Clymer manual is a good investment, especially since it has electrical diagrams of your bike.

As an upstate subject of the Philosopher King Il Douche Andrew the Cuomo I fully sympathize your situation in the Jefferson province of Commiefornia.

All good info, thank you. Especially the part about the kickstand. I’m getting closer to being able to try here, but have one more question

Ball bearings in the ignition switch? How many should there be and where did they go? I have one,It seems like there should be four

It's been a couple years since I've been in an ignition switch, but I'm pretty sure there is only one ball bearing and it's for the detent and has a spring behind it.
