Reuse of shaft in water/oil pump K100
« on: January 01, 2020, 04:14:41 PM »
Hi!

I'm currently rebuilding the water/oil pump on my K100. Do you guys think its possible to reuse the shaft with the amount of pitting shown at the attachment?

Ah, OK. In general, is the leakages coming from bad seals or a bad shaft like mine then?
I think the bike had oil in the water, because the walls inside the pump had a black layer to it (recently bought it).

Nope, did not know Inge :/

What did you do?  I am looking at a similar issue and am unsure if I should use or replace the shaft. Inside of this pump was clean, just oil from the weep hole.

Welcome. A closer pic would be helpful

Shaft looks like some minor discoloration. If it is not badly scored or pitted would reuse it. Smooth out with fine steel wool or Scotch-brite pad

Here is another picture- It is hard to photograph.  I did clean it up, you can feel imperfection with your nail, but not deep or sharp pits.

I took a chance and reused it. The bike is still in assembly-mode, and therefore not tested to see if I did the rigth thing  icon_cheers

Put it back together drove it about 25 miles no leaks.  I had been getting about 4 drops of oil when I would stop and a wet oil pan.

You use any sealant on the mating surfaces?

I used Three Bond 1207b for the gasket material pump to engine and cover to pump.  I was surprised how easy it was to work with.  Put about 50 more miles on it today and found a bit of a drop at the weep hole, not enough to drop off and none on the oil pan.  Not sure if it was from the assembly grease or seeping, but I can live with that.
