State of the Spline

i havent pulled the transmission yet but im curious what you fine people think about the condition of these splines. photographed are the final drive, drive shaft and transmission spline. what kind of mileage is left on these buggers? what to expect?

Well, I'll add this before the fine people chime in.
Transmission shaft should be replaced. Rear drive spline appears almost worn out, too. Compare with these.

If it were my bike, it'd be off the road until repaired unless I was looking for adventure+.

what to expect?
The following is what I'd expect but unlike the bike in the video, your bike's problem may be confined to just the rear units.

I'd say the trans shaft looks good to me, not so much the driveshaft. The final drive looks decent

Drive shaft very bad condition, bevel is more or less.

Check out these new aftermarket shafts. They pretty much resolve the whole dry spline by incorporating the very modification Bruno does to his refurbished splines

The Ei driveshaft has been very popular with the R100GS riders where failure is more of a problem. Ei also has a K75/K100 driveshaft which is less known because as a general rule we don't have u-joint failures on the K models like we do on the R100GS (only spline failures typically). But it has all the features and benefits that the R100GS driveshaft is known for such as:

All parts are available separately so if you were to have a u-joint failure at some point (unlikely) you could buy just the front part and a u-joint kit for example. With a BMW shaft you have to throw it away and start over even if you only need the spline or just a knuckle for example.

The u-joints are larger than stock, very heavy duty German joints made by Elbe with grease fittings so they can be serviced.

Specific to the K model driveshaft, a closed grease canal so the female spline can be packed with grease and it will stay put unlike the factory shaft where the grease just migrates out of the spline.

These shafts are sold around the world by other BMW specialists in Australia, Germany, England and elsewhere and have withstood the test of time with proven reliability.

They are less expensive than a BMW shaft, and rebuildable so in our view it's a no brainer that this shaft is the better choice.

I think it was one of the European BMW parts outlets online that sells replacement splines for driveshafts. Have to have a machine shop lop off your old splines and weld the new shaft piece with the new splines on.

Thank goodness my bike came with a spare driveshaft in good shape

Wouldn't converting to a K1100 Paralever side arm and driveshaft and final drive fix the problem?

I just bought a new OEM driveshaft -- probably would have gone for the aftermarket one but I had a gift card at Bob's for $250 of the $343 it cost me. But with proper lubing it will probably outlast me - my last OEM one got chewed up primarily due to lack of maintenance -- noone's fault but mine.

I wish I had sent my toasted ones to Bruno while I had a chance. I have one of his driveshafts that came with a bike I bought last year -- amazing considering he only charged $200 for the rebuild. Here's wishing a quick and full recovery for whatever is ailing him.
