To Paint or Not to Paint, The Muffler that is...
« on: July 19, 2012, 10:33:06 AM »
Okay gang.
Here is the question. If your muffler had battery acid spilt on it and the chrome was turning 4 diffrent colors from heat.
Would you paint it or try some other way to repair/replace it?
I have some flat black grill paint that is good up to 1200 deg F. that I have used before on my gas grills and it worked great and came out looking good.
I was thinking that I could tape off the tip ( still looks good ) and paint the rest up to the header pipes flat black.
I'm not a big Chrome person so covering it would not be an issue.

Well ball been tossed up! Who is going to kick it 1st?

You would probably want to attempt to neutralize the acid somehow.  Or, I would suspect it would continue to dissolve your muffler from under the paint.  Maybe?... :dunno

Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

@ Tom
Acid took care of. It was that way when I got it. I washed it off really good when I got it to make sure.
Looks like the battery froze and busted. They had cleaned it up but not before it had got to the muffler.
If I do it I will have to remove it and do a good cleaning and light sanding anyway.

That looks cool! That may be an option also.

Here is a few pic to see what I have to work with.
Looks like it had a shield on it at one time. They may have cut off the mounting brackets.
The black patch in #502 is where I tested the paint. I ran the bike until hot then let it cool, then did it a again.
Paint seems to stick and does not rub off.

Fun, Fun...

A lot of times the mounting brackets for the heat shield rust off.

+1 on Frank's ceramic coating.  That's definitely on my todo list for my new K75.
