new from PA
« on: September 24, 2019, 09:54:03 AM »
New here from south central PA.  A coworker has been trying to sell me his 85 K100 RS for the past eight years and it finally happened.  It's an early 85 he bought new and rode all over Europe as his only transportation while stationed in Spain. It has 65,000 miles on it.  The last few years it's only been used once a year to go get an inspection sticker and whatever repairs it needed at the dealer. (new rear shock, new Metzelers) but it was stored inside, at least.

This past year it wouldn't start. So now it's getting the fuel pump and isolator, etc.   The PO put a Pichler fairing on it as soon as he brought it home, and the original Alaska Blue fairing was sealed in a box from that day until a few weeks ago when I opened it.  I'm going to try to sell it to to offset some of the parts costs.

I'm not a new rider - I've had everything from Ninja 250s to Concours 1000.   Currently I have this Bimmer not-yet-back-together, an '09 Rebel 250 (also blue) that I made into a bobber, and a 71 Yamaha 175 Enduro.  I'm the second owner of all three, the last two I got from my late father-in-law.    I'm a ride-to-work kinda guy, and also for pleasure. And the occasional road trip now that I again have something with more horsepower than my riding mower.

Gonna do some site searching to find out what fuel injectors I should buy, and try to find a value for a basically-NOS fairing.  Mine's got an 8/84 build date and I'm finding some parts changed design for the later 85s.

Welcome, overeasy!

Post some photos of your moto using the Attachments and other options feature under the reply box. You won't be able to preview your images; they show up when you post them. It's an adventure using that feature.

those Pichler's are sharp looking on K's, love to see some pics.  Amazing how many 85's keep popping up.

Welcome. Alot of good moes and info here.

Notable differences of the pre-85/86 K100 are the seat pan design with matching tail cowl section, the water/oil pump design changed, throttle cable design and fuel tank/fuel level sender/fuel return check valve.

Your 8/84 may have the European "hotter" cams known as "Finest Year K"

The pre-1985/86 has molded pillion handles as part of the seat pan, metal or plastic seat pan.
Post-1985/86 removed handles from seat pan and added handles to the tail cowl section.

The PO said the one mechanic said this bike made more power than any K100 he's ridden. I thought maybe it was just a story but the hotter cam explanation might be it.  It was a US-spec bike - bought at Frank's in Manheim, PA (original keychain included) It went to Europe when the PO was deployed to Spain after he bought it.

Check condition of the inside of fuel tank. Lowest portions are prone to corrosion when moto is left sitting for some time.
Not many 85 tanks left around in this condition

Mines a little smashed on the top, and that's even the right color.  Aside from black chunks of vibration damper inside, mine appears to be stable and shiny. No sign of corrosion when peeking in the filler, at least. Thank you for all the wisdom. I have a lot to learn.
