LED stop/tail lights - help needed
« on: March 24, 2017, 06:06:03 AM »

Hi Guys, this is a re-post as i  think i put it in the wrong section before.
Here goes - my Kbike is almost finished and ready for MOT here in sunny Britain -
all that remains is new tail lights. and to tidy the front light array.
i bought an inexpensive trailer dual tail running/brake light moulded integral 12 v LED combination (groan) Unit to replace the missing OEM unit. since this is a rat project, i discarder the tail moulding as none of the interior tail lights remained and bought a tail tidy. the original harness connector block remains attached to the loomharness and the indicators i bought snapped in and worked right out of the pack.
however. following the owners manual wiring diagram and the lights provided colour coding (white=earth, red=brakes Brown =tail)i run into this outcome -
in the 1st ignition switch position the running light is on (dim) but when the key is turned to position 2 (all live) and started i get full illumination even when the brakes are not in use. ive tried switching the red and brown over, now all i get is the brakes on/off fron and rear switches both working (yay!) but no dimmed "running light"

stated Current drawn at 13.8v is 0.11A for Stop and 0.02A for tail. am i missing something here?
ive seen people use 2 diodes and a resitor to get this to work but by making a 1 into 2 junction as their strips all have 1 live rail (single function leds).
can i do the same thing but with a single diode and resistor inline on the tail light? would i have to add a diode to the other "stop" lights rail?
do i need to add or subtract anything else due to this being 21st century LEDS on a bike built for incandescents?

Hi Guys, this is a re-post as i  think i put it in the wrong section before.
Your previous post was in the correct section before, InkyPaul.
The Motobrick Workshop is where members present problems and receive suggestions for diagnosis and correction, and you've got problems.

It's not useful to start two threads covering the same subject. Responses to your questions can be missed by you and people who want to help won't know where to post. Furthermore, elements of this post don't make sense.

It's better to stick with your original post and location then bump it with an additional post and more information to bring it to readers' attention again.

To verify, the new tail light earth wire is colored white and you are connecting it to the bike's brown harness wire?
There are many threads discussing the installation of LED tail lights and turn signals.
Read this one then this one to get a basic idea of the system.

I had a similar issue after doing a ton of rewiring with forward controls. I ended up running the brake light wires separately from the loom. It was an easier fix than trying to track down the  issue with the loom and grounds and power source etc. Plus isolating the brake line guarantees you have it fixed lol

thanks mate, i came to the same conclusion myself, esp. after noting that i have a spare fuse bay available (its an LT model with no additional equipment)

i will probably have to do the BMU bypass mod at a later date but this should get it thru its MOT for now.
