G'day from Sydney Australia
« on: December 06, 2016, 02:26:10 AM »
Well Cobbitty to be precise (if there's any local Flying Brick riders)

Thanks for the excellent forum guys - I've been enjoying the split/multiple/unstable personalities and informative threads  :hehehe

I'm staying back at work to write this, and my wife is probably wondering where I am so is it ok if I just copy and paste from the K100 forum?  Or is that bad form?  Or shouldn't I care?  :neener:

Needless to say, I'm super pumped to have this tired old K-Brick in my life, and am really looking forward to getting my hands dirty and getting intimate with her when I can get a quite hour in the garage

I'll get a couple of pics up and do the copy and paste thing below.

Speak soon!

Cheers,
Nods

"Well, my first ever BMW, and my mates over on the Tiger1050 forum seem to have gone lightly on me for the sacrilege Razz  I restored a '74 Triumph Bonneville over 20 years ago for a high school project and haven't done any riding or wrenching in that time.  About two years ago I bought the 2012 Tiger 1050 which I lurrrve to scratch that itch that had been bugging me for years, and now the Trumpy has a very tired stable mate in the form of an '85 K100 RT that is in need of some loving care.

The bike has about 70,000 km's and my mate who I bought it off heard it running just before he brought it to my place.  My mate got it from a local mechanic who got it running intermittently by connecting a battery directly to the starter motor, so I think it's needs a starter relay.

As you can see from the photos it's a definite project bike.  I've been wanting to get stuck into a project for a long time, and my mate got me looking at the K bikes.  My mate incidently has a low miler Jap import coming on the slow boat from Japan, so we'll be out riding in Wollongong/Camden (south and south-west of Sydney) at some point on our K bikes.  My mate will keep his original as it's in very good condition, and I'll be doing some kind of brat type conversion (I need a two-seater so my wife can ride with me!)

My plan is to invest my time and passion into the bike then keep it forever.  I will be conscious of the cost of the project, but resale value is not a consideration.  I plan on making it all black with a nice black gloss tank.  The project will take quite some time as I have two young kids and won't get a lot of time in the garage to myself!  I'm a fitter and machinist by trade and a mechanical engineer, but that was a long time ago.  I've been working in IT for the last 15 years.

I've already learnt a lot, but there's a long way to go!  It's a bloody heavy big lump too!  I've got to figure out how to support it as it's missing the centre stand and side stand.

My plan is to start stripping it down then get it running again upon reassembly with the painted and reconditioned parts.  Or is the collective wisdom that I should get it running first to make sure all is ok before I jump into the project?

I'm planning on using the motogadget m-unit/switches/speedo, but everyone seems to say the K-electrics are more complex than other bikes.  Any advice from anyone who's done this?

Like MaraudeRS who has joined here recently, I'll join the motobrick forum too as that seems to be another great resource.  I've been following his thread on that forum with interest."

That's the plan to use. For somebody like you with experience as a fitter, machinist, mechanical engineer, IT tech and successful bike restorer, this will be a walk in the park—a polluted park, but park nonetheless.

I've had mine 18 yrs after a succession of  Austrian, Czech, Brit, Italian and Japanese bikes. It's the longest I've ever owned one bike so you do get to know it and it's foibles and peculiarities. Bricks don't like sitting and rubber bits deteriorate check the pump damper and replace internal fuel lines with 5/16 SAE 30 R10 submersible line, external lines SAE 30 R8. Avoid E10 fuel it turns fuel lines and the damper into Vegemite and can get into the injectors. Electrical connectors need to be gone over and cleaned with Deoxit, I then put dielectric grease in them it keeps the air out which helps combat corrosion. Avoid staring the bike until you have cleaned out the fuel system, cooling system ( OEM coolant is cheap from BMW with distilled water) and changed the oil and filter. RBM is the resident expert on instrument conversion, LED conversion and all things electrical. I tend to go overseas for parts Moto Bins, Motorworks in the UK, Beemer Boneyard, Euro Motoelectrics in the US. Once you get it going don't be too concerned if it smokes, they tend to settle after putting some mileage on them. If it is severe you can run high detergent flushing oil for a short period. Good to see more Ozzie Bricks they are getting quite thin on the road around Brizzie.

Thanks mate. I figured with these bikes being bullet proof engine-wise that I won't bother pulling the heads or block, but will just check the valve clearances and go with the fact my mate saw it running before he sold it to me.

She has a few oil leaks which I haven't investigated yet, but hopefully an easy fix with a new gasket set around the sump pan (or whatever you call the right side of the engine).

Thanks a lot for all that info mate. I haven't heard of Deoxit - just a spray can at Supercheap auto? And the Yanks talk about dialectic grease on the Triumph forum but I haven't used it before, Supercheap again?

Yeah will be good to have two more Bricks on the road down this way - one a nice original K100RS and mine a modified K100RT, although I guess the model becomes irrelevant once the bikes been changed. The different models are just different fairing/touring specs right?

So you're in Brisbane? For some reason I thought you were further up north.

Welcome, looks like you have a nice project there.  The inside of your tank doesn't look too bad, you might want to pull the fuel pump and it's damper just to see how it looks and to see if it may cause any problems.  Other than that, I would just change the fuel filter and check for any holes that may have corroded in the low spots..

Spend the time and effort to find Deoxit.  There are electrical contact cleaners out there, especially from automotive suppliers, that will eat plastic and strip paint.  Don't take a chance on getting the wrong stuff.  I had to learn this the hard way.

Jaycar has Deoxit and dielectric grease you can also use silicon grease. I'm not actually in Brisbane as such, I'm in the first shire north of Brisbane halfway between Briz and the Sunshine Coast.

Leak on right side could be as simple as the oil sightglass...

There is a easy way to check the source of oil leaks. First clean up the engine, let it dry, then spray the area with spray on Talc. Leak will show right up. Because you have an older Brick try Lavender scented Talc.

G'day Nods

You're about an hour from my place (Wollongong). I have seen at least 4 Ks in my local area.
Good luck with it all.
Message me if needed re previous Brick tasks and we can chat on phone. This forum and the K100 (Aust) site are both very good sources of info. But do have a look for the info first - it's all there.
My bike had been off the road for 8 years and had all the usual issues. Now registered (on historical plates). Speedo still not working (follow the cars), still trying to finesse the throttle sync (leaking inlet rubbers probably). With full fairing on, bike is quite hot (more airflow on (my) body needed. I will probably strip fairing off bike.
Of course, you'll probably end up buying more - you can get them from $500 (less than the cost of a OEM fuel pump) - so repair and fix if possible.

Hear from you soon ish

Regards

Cheers Guy thanks for the offer to chat. I'm kind of a Wollongong boy myself as I did high school there and lived in town for a few years after school. Everyone seems to know everyone in the Gong so I wouldn't be surprised if you know my mate Phil who's a firey (and may have already joined this forum?) - he sold me the bike and has the Jap import coming, so there'll be two more Bricks cruising the streets at some point.  It's amazing how much info all the owners and enthusiasts have put together on these bikes. I'm just trying to understand the subtle differences between early/late models as my 1/85 bike seems to be right in the middle of some kind of transition phase.

I'm sure I'll look you up via PM for a chat soon, so thanks again for the offer.

Elliot
