Laitch et al: Starter sprag-- I remember reading that in the manual... to clarify, I depress the start buttom I hear the relay click.....no spin. roll it 10 feet drop clutch ( I suspect this re positions the brush on a dirty or faulty starter motor commutator and presto, engage starter switch, and it spins/starts engine. intermittent problem. I can put up with this for awhile pre snow. Nothing here that will strand me by the roadside... I'll review the youtube video from Martin, Thanks Martin. sounds like the starter brushes are contaminated or worn out.
I'm having another electrical issue but I'll post it separately. I recently traced and replaced load shed relay in another recent closed thread... when the headlight stayed on even with key off. new load shed relay..check.. Now reassembled, the headlight is randomly turning off while rolling down the road, in fact everything on the instrument cluster goes black. Pretty spooky the other morning heading off to work at "zero dark thirty" and poof no headlight on a no moon night... :mbird flickered on and off enough for me to limp it home to the garage and replace it with 4 wheels for my commute.
Just an added note about this flickering headlight- I removed side cowl fairings and "thwacked/wiggled all the connectors ahead of the headstock ie headlight, blinkers, instrument. No readily apparent loose connections.
I seem to be ramping up a gaggle of electrical gripes that may or may not be related. Isn't there a system that when it sees too low voltage shuts things down ( maybe the load shed relay??) Last night I put a trickle charger on it to see if the headlight poltergeist is chased by a peaked battery. In any event I'm suspicious of the battery and alternator systems. I had plans to roll the K 75 north to St Paul this weekend, but I'll have to use a car alas, these issues are too spooky to be tested on a night ride out of town. Time for work!
