K series luggage compatibility

Hi folks - will introduce myself in newbie section as soon as I have the obligatory pictures of my newly aquired low mileage 1986 K75 - but as I am yet to collect it I thought i'd ask a couple of Q's first..

I am looking to pick up an OEM luggage set asap. It currently has no luggage mounting 'bars/rails' (?) fitted, but these appear readily available and also appear to be a universal K75/K100 fit.. please advise if this is not the case.

Regarding luggage, ive seen some listed as 'newer type'. Other than slight styling tweaks and some sets coming with locking mechanisms (most sets having appeared to have ejected the locks at some point!), and others with keyless closing mechanisms, my question is, do the 'later' type tragkorbs fit earlier model K's?

I'd imagine that all luggage fits all bikes as the rear end shape on the K's doesnt appear to have changed, but want to be certain before I invest.

Is there a luggage version that is hands down better in use than other versions for a particular reason?

Should the question actually be 'is it aesthetically innapropriate to fit later luggage on an early model?'  :nono

Welcome, Reflektor. That seems like a pointless exercise of your imagination but I could just be short-sighted. Fantasizing about mermaids and whips while you're waiting might be interesting.

There seem to be three generations of Integral Cases—the object of your current passion—that fit  K-bike Z-bar luggage mounts, and Z-bar luggage mounts on some late models of the retired airhead line. The largest capacity case type of those is the type 3—the one with the outward facing lock cylinders, and the side roundels and reflectors in vertical alignment.

Maybe someone will come along  to give you an opinion about side case aesthetics.

Gen 3 is what you want.   The slightly larger size allows you to put a helmet in them.

There is also a city case option.  Much smaller.

thanks guys. would seem that all versions pretty much fit on the K series then.

I happened to find a poorly listed pair of lightly used tragkorbs on ePay for less than £50 and they are even the correct colour (black) and complete with the Z frames - so a real result.

I think they maybe Gen 2, they are pretty smooth in appearance and are keyless. Nice and big, should be just the job for light touring.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a full set of fittings for installation of the Z frames?

I have a bunch of stainless bolts following a phone conversation with Motoworks - however, isn't there supposed to be a spacer of sorts as well?

Most BMW dealers have exploded diagrams for parts. This is the site I use the most because I like its format.

Attached is a Z-frame setup for your bike. Part numbers, cost and availability can be found on any dealer site using these inventory formats.

Thanks, Thats the drawing I remember spotting before. So, if I have a bike that's not previously been fitted with frames, I will not only require the bolts but also all of the other fiddly bracketry visible on that diagram?

You'll only require the "fiddly bracketry" if you have nothing into which those bolts bolts can fasten allowing the frames to function as they were designed.

If you already have the Z-frames it should become clear what is missing. Compare what you have on your bike with what the diagram shows that you need. If that's baffling, you probably should compare your bike alongside another that has the frames.

Only reason I ask is that im not currently with my bike, I have the frames at home but haven't offered them up to fit yet - I (naively) assumed that with the addition of 6 bolts they would neatly just slot into place.
I don't think my bike has ever had frames fitted before so im guessing ill find that I need to also source the brackets. I remember a while back finding a 'fitting kit' on a website somewhere, and IIRC it included the bolts, and an approx 30mm spacer (maybe 2 spacers). It would now seem that is not a complete fitting kit.

Your bike may have had Z-frames but they had been removed before your ownership; the attachment pieces might still be in place and escaped your notice.

I just posted a set of the luggage brackets in the FS section for $40 plus ship.  I added the v.3 bags to my 92 K75. I believe these were the newest and largest of the hard cases.  I paid close to $500 for them.  They are usually pretty pricey if good condition.
