Michelin Activs
« on: July 24, 2016, 12:02:17 AM »
Was running Michelin Pilot 110x80 radial in front and Avon Azaro 140x80 radial in rear. Ran pretty well, but the rear just wore out (after about 5000 mi) and I decided to try bias again. Put the Activs on front and rear (100x90 and 130x90 respectively.) about 700 mi so far, mostly highway. Running nicely, as good as the radials. Seem pretty grippy. No rain riding yet.

I just put a set on this weekend. Saw nothing but good reviews online for grip and mileage.

No rain yet? Get ready for an unpleasant surprise. And as soon as you think your rear drive bearing gave up, beter check very thoroughly because as the PA's go past half worn they tend to develop a buzzy feel... Yes they last pretty long, but never again for me...

Prior to purchasing the Actives I searched a lot of online reviews - I only found one negative comment of them in wet conditions, which was also posted by you. Everyone else seemed to like them. I decided to give them a shot. I'll report back at the end of the season.

I did find a lot of negative comments on the Macadams, which they replaced.

The Michelin Pilot Activ on the rear is performing well but after 23,000 km (on a K75 -- 100/90-18) I figure it must be nearing the end. The only wear indicators are in the grooves near the edges and these indicate plenty of rubber is left. The bald center of the tire makes it look worn out and has drawn comment. Perhaps it is flattened in this area but without indicators I cannot be certain. I have a new Shinko 712 on the way but if the Michelin is still good I would be crazy to get rid of such a durable skin. Perhaps I should just wait until I see cords? See photo (or not, as it does not want to attach)

Kmev, I know for a fact I am not alone in not liking those tyres. You might not find negative reviews other than mine as you probably aren't Dutch... No worries, tyres and how they feel to you is very personal and also depends on how and where you ride them. If they work for you then all is good right? Have fun and ride on!

Got 2,000 miles on them and they seem to handle just fine. On rain grooves they don't make the bike wander like some tires do, but you can tell they are there. I have ridden them in the rain on a couple occasions and there was nothing unnerving about them, but as slick as the white traffic paint is around here when wet I don't ride too aggressively in the rain.

I have 6,500 miles on my Pilot Activs since I installed them in July. I have ridden them in rain and sun, in temps ranging from 35 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and over 55 mph curving backroads to 85 mph interstate runs. I am pretty happy with them. They follow rain groove a little bit more than the Dunlop D404s they replaced, but they are giving me a much longer service life. I don't think I have another 6,500 miles in them, however. Another 5,000 miles perhaps, but based on what they looked like new I would saw I am over halfway through their lifespan.  The front tire is beginning to show a very slight amount of scalloping.

I installed Dybabeads in these tires along with their filtered schraeder valves. Every time I turn the cap off the valve stem to check air pressure, the valves hiss loudly as they lose air. I need to try different valve stem caps to see if they do not leak, but I am not overly impressed with the filtered valves. I always have to add air, but I do not know if they are loosing air while riding or loosing it all when I remove the cap.
