Warm weather riding gear
« on: June 21, 2016, 07:41:37 PM »
Hi,

I live in Costa Rica which is a very warm and often very wet country (the average temperature year round where I live is 72-80 degrees).  My 1991 K100RS 4V has been a joy so far, however I wasn't fully aware of the 'toaster' rep of these bikes. Added to that is the fact my jacket came from the UK with me and while a 25 year old  Lewis Leathers jacket has a serious 'cool' factor it tends to leave me anything but after a few miles in CR.

Which brings me, eventually, to the point of this post.

Gear here costs a fortune and is very limited in choice so I need to buy online - there is a bewildering numberof sites, options and types of clothing.

So if anyone has any recommendations for both me and the missus for good riding gear that will keep us properly protected but not leave us with heat exhaustion nor break the bank I would appreciate it.

I am basically looking for jackets and gloves and riding boots to start with.

Thanks very much

Jonathan

I use a tourmaster intake air 4 jacket.   Like it.

The videos are instructive and fairly objective.

For summer don't buy a black jacket, silver, grey or white is a lot cooler. Go for a mesh jacket with elbow and shoulder armour, one that has a zip out waterproof liner, some have two liners one waterproof and one quilted and waterproof. You can also get a gel scarf, you soak them over night in water and they swell up and slowly release water keeping you cool. They also do a vest but they can be pricey, I have one jacket that I can wear all year by just adding the liner and wearing a thin pure wool jumper.

I wear an Olympia jacket that I bought when I moved to Oklahoma.  My first day there was 110 degrees and I sweated through my leathers.  I drove straight to the local moto shop and bought this jacket that is a mesh outer layer with tougher material at friction points, reflective piping, plastic in the shoulders and elbows, and a light back pad.  It also came with a waterproof shell that slips over the base layer, and an insulated layer that zips into the base layer in cold weather.

I've worn this jacket at 110 degrees and at 20 degrees and it's done well at both, would recommend.

How about posting an image or a link, Euro Spec?

I can second the motion on the Olympia jacket.  I've had one for a while and it works great in a wide range of temperatures including during the recent "heatwave" here in Southern California where the temperatures got up to 105 degrees.

One plus for the tourmaster. ..sizing.

They don't just have the normal "s,m,l,xl,etc".  They also have long sizes.  I would normally have to get an xl to get long enough sleeves and torso.   With tourmaster a medium (long) fits perfectly.

I wear a Fieldsheer mesh jacket and pants set that I bought over five years ago.  It has armor and protective padding and has held up quite well over the years.  My gloves are a pair of RevIt! summer gloves that are just now starting to wear out in the fingers.  Boots are not a seasonal change for me, always full leather Gaerne.

The summer commute here in coastal Virginia can be hot with stop and go traffic but this combination keeps the discomfort to a minimum.

When I bought my K I got the Airglide 3 jackets in hi-viz yellow and the pants in silver for the better half and myself and have been pleased with them.
