88 K100LT Random Misfire Suddenly Worse
« on: May 19, 2016, 09:59:08 PM »
Hello All,

I'm having an issue with my K100, that after searching, I couldn't find another post with similar symptoms. This is only my second day of riding the bike, although I bought it this winter and did some modifications as well as yard riding. First day out I rode it for 20 minutes round trip, bike started right up, seemed a little rich, but had no misfire to speak of. Today I took it out, maybe 15 minutes into the ride, the bike started misfiring badly. When I let off the gas the engine died, would not restart. I gave it a little throttle while cranking and the bike started but was still misfiring badly. I was only 2 minutes from a friends house so I nursed it there. In a quick investigation I found spark on all cyls, good spray from all injectors. Also found all 4 plugs to be fouled. Will look into it more tomorrow but was curious to see if anyone has had similar issues. Any help is greatly appreciated.

And just how old is the gas in the tank? Was the tank full with fresh gas and a pint of stabilizer when stored? Try fresh gas and report back.

BTW clean cafe........but get out your Dremel and lose the tank holes right & left. Beyond fresh gas, check the fuel pump function.

Thanks. Gas tank was filled today with 93. Friend filled up at the same time and had no issues so I am ruling out bad gas.

I would look at air intake issues. Check the bushings by the injectors with propane.  (Sounds dangerous but actually safer than started fluid).  That rubber can crack suddenly and give the problems you describe.

Right. :laughing-on-ground:

Following on from Mystic Red's suggestion, also pull the fecking airbox, clean the box of mice, gazelle and road deposits, clean the filter, check all hoses large or small, check the vacuum caps on the throttle bodies for integrity, then report back.  Don't forget the installing of fork gaiters, too.

So you searched motobrick.com for "rough idle" and couldn't find any similar problem threads?

Thanks. Gas tank was filled today with 93. Friend filled up at the same time and had no issues so I am ruling out bad gas.

Doesn't matter. Pour a bottle of Seafoam or HEET in your tank and rule out water for sure.

It's probably an air leak though.

Be advised though, doing that will attract dogs.

It wasn't meant as an opinion, Jack, but rather as a heart-felt warning. I deduced such an outcome by observing Ace's avatar photo as I read his battery advice. I just don't want anyone bitten who doesn't actually deserve it. I care too much.

JackGeiger, since you aren't noticing things, allow me to notice that if Laitch says "because I care", put your hand over your wallet. And by the way, better get that jackass picture in your avatar, cause apparently the HC is on a Love Animals" jag again, who knows how long this will last. Bet he's feeling bad about running over the neighbor widow's cat when I was up there riding with him .
EVERYBODY PAY ATTENTION :mbird IT's LOVE ANIMALS, PEOPLE. POST THOSE AVATARS! :2thumbup:

Little update. Checked the resistances on the MAF, IAT, water temp and all came back within spec. Added some Heet just as a precaution. Cleaned EFI connector and replaced plugs with D7EA. Also inspected injectors for any leaks, all hold. Replaced a cracked line from the tank to FPR. Next up is checking the fuel pressure. Bike is dumping fuel at all times it seems. Will not start with the fuel pump plugged in while cranking.

When you say will not start, is it flooding. And if so will it start with the fuel pump fuse removed ( Kraffstoppe # 6 ).

I have been unplugging the 4 pin plug for the pump/sending unit. But yes it floods. I can get it started with the pump unplugged and cracking the trottle.
