It always seemed like the windshield on my Pichler V1 threw turbulent air at the top of my helmet. Back when I was loaned an R1100RT (oh noez a motoboxer) I played with the power windshield and experienced a nice lack of that turbulence. Is it proper to call that "buffeting?" The bouncing around sucked.
The height of the windshield is adjustable a bit but that didn't help and I like having my normal line of sight be just a little over the windshield.
After researching the topic a bit via Google I decided to try cutting the lip off the top of the windshield. My bike came with a tinted windshield that was otherwise exactly the same as my clear one so I took my jigsaw and lopped it off. Then the turbulence was just heading straight for my face instead of hitting the top of my helmet. This was last week.
I read about Laminar Lips but it seems like they work wonders for some people and don't do crap for others. At close to $100 I didn't feel like dumping the money on an experiment yet.
I realized that the lip from the tinted windshield looked a lot like a laminar lip, so I taped that on and went for a ride. And it actually helped quite a bit.
I trawled ebay a bit and found a slightly used universal Laminar Lip. Their website seems to suggest it for tombstone-type windshields like on Harleys and cruisers. I scored it for $45 complete with a bunch of 3M Dual Lock fasteners. From the company this lip is $87.
I taped it on and went for a ride...wow what a difference :riding: . It's crazy. I don't yet understand the theory on how it works but holy crap it works. Worth every penny. Feeling the air with my left hand, the airflow is moved up a few inches. It's still hitting the top of my helmet but it's much smoother and no more horrible turbulence. Much quieter too.
Their instructions say to try it between having the top of the lip be level with the top of the windshield up to the lip being halfway over the top of the windshield. I moved it around and found that it worked the best being level. It actually sucked and didn't really do anything when moved up.
I took some time to measure and eyeball and get it centered...got it placed and it wasn't centered...I'm gonna leave it until it drives me crazy, and no one will know or notice except for me anyway. Windshield is curved, Laminar Lip is curved, and being used (and shipped via USPS) I think it had extra curving. Reminds me of when I restored my fiberglass boat...no straight edges to measured off of...
I don't know if it'll work for you and your windshield (I don't know of any other Pichler V1's on the board) but it definitely worked for me
