Now that it seems everybody is stripping down old RT's and converting them to naked K bikes, is there a market for the old RT bits?

I've been debating whether or not to clear out a closet and take my fairing parts to the dump. Dealing with ebay BS for $10 here and there just isn't worth the trouble and my fiberglass parts aren't in the best shape anyway.

I have some of the same.........ratty, broken fibreglass, missing trim, and probably not worth anything. The bad stuff I do toss, and hold anything that might come in handy to somebody, mostly on a trade basis, but also stuff I end up giving away. If you got room to keep it, fine, but if space is tight, I wouldn't keep anything that doesn't have a value greater than $50. And packing & shipping is a pain in the ass! Why doesn't someone ( Johnny?) accept all donated goods, like a Bricker Care Closet, to then hand out free plus postage to needy Brickers.

Tim don't dump it, try selling what you can. Then try offering it free for pickup, it is better to have it around, than in the dump and lost forever. Body panels are getting scarce in OZ and fetch reasonable prices over here. So eventually the US will be the same. Our local BMW bike wrecker charges like a wounded bull for any parts, because he is the only one in Brisbane.

I could probably use some RT mirrors, mebbe a couple other bits that aren't trashed. My SO likes her full fairing weather protection (until high summer, that is). And the PO had a couple of incidents moving the bike around his garage. The ads I've seen lately, no one wants to ship.

I know shipping is a pain, just wait until you sell a set of GS ADV hardbags and try to pack them.

So, whadda ya got?

I'll probably get rid of the big fairing piece and catalog the smaller bits in case anybody wants them.

I just converted a naked K to a full fairing Rt. I was lucky to find a c complete set with all brackets and the nuts and bolts.. If the complete kit wasn't there I would not have done the swap. Buying misc would kill you cost wise.

I parted out a R1100RT to start my "free motorcycle" game, which I am continuing with my 2 into 1 project thread here. Still have a LOAD of parts...

The small stuff has been the easiest, especially anything that can fit into a flat-rate USPS box. I sold two huge body panels to a guy on the East coast. The shipping was so expensive (RT side panel required an "oversize" box) that I ended up cutting my price in half just to make the sale. Just yesterday, I threw away the LH side panel, because it had been down on that side and the cost/hassle of shipping would not make it worth trying to sell. Plus it's huge and hard to store - it felt good to drop it in a dumpster.

I went to BeemerBoneyard and used their website to come up with prices (all lower than what they ask). So... clean out the closet, make a list of stuff, post it here, other BMW sites, Craigslist, etc. See what you can sell. Maybe you can take the rest to a salvage yard and get a little credit for the balance of parts. Try a recycling center if you have any significant pieces of metal to sell by the pound. The trash can should be the last resort.

The cost of shipping is killing the market. I tried to sell an RT windshield last winter, but the cost of the "oversize" package was so high, even by not taking anything for the shield, the cost to the buyer was more than what I felt it was worth. I tried repacking it three times and never could get a package that wasn't "oversize". It's sitting here now in the last attempt to package it. Will try Craig's list for local pick up, but have resigned myself to the reality that even though it is usable it is destined for the dumpster.

Same problem with a set of RS fairing lowers and belly pan with hardware. They are in almost perfect condition, primed and ready for paint, but with shipping aren't saleable at a price that makes sense to me.

Probably need to start a co-operative courier service dropping of parts for a reasonable fee, while going for cross country rides. A bit hard with large parts. It's a shame to loose parts to the dump. I am previously guilty of dumping stuff, but now if I can't sell it, I try to give it away. :musicboohoo:

From what I can see, it appears that RTs are frequently on the chopping block to become cafe bikes. Perhaps a good strategy would be to try to partner with somebody who wants to chop one - and offer to strip off all the RT parts for them. Or just buy an RT, strip the RT-specific bits, and sell the balance to somebody who wants to do a cafe project.

One wonders if Brick-RTs will become rare and sought-after in future. They sure seem a better alternative for the budget-minded tourer than similar vintage Goldwings.

Not much different than the FXRT and FXRD Harleys. They were a nice touring option with hard bags, trunk and fairing on the FXR chassis, then in the late 90's (when Harley dealers had waiting lists for new bikes) lots of them were stripped, painted with questionable taste, and had lots of chrome thrown on them and re-sold as "custom".

Now complete examples command, ummm, questionable prices.

I'm not one to cast stones, as I bought the latest RT to hit the garage to furnish replacement parts for a paint job on my SO's RT. But I think I have enough RS fairing parts to do up a K75RS for me. It might have been cheaper to buy RT fairing parts, but as noted, shipping is a deal-killer in most instances.

At the rate the cafe guys are stripping them I expect that in a year or so I'll have the world's only RT. Then I'll be able to sell it for big bucks to the cafe guy who wants to strip the last one.

Seeing that all lot of you seem to be off loading RT fairing stuff like helicopters into the sea after the fall of Saigon...

Anyone got a K100RT 1984 (ie earlier model) dash? Skinny, poorly made black plastic ltem the fits under the screen and on top of the fairing. Usually broken. Having tried fibreglass the back...failed.

Failing that, anyone got any expertise in plastic welding?

I found one of those parts on ebay for a reasonable price. It was white, but not damaged. It might take a while to find another, but they can be found if you're diligent. Maybe try some of the salvage yards too.

Ain't that the truth. I'm keeping an eye out for a color-match RH fairing lower for my RT. The OEM is is perfect condition except were the front mount tab broke halfway thru the tab. The lower is well mounted and doesn't move with the tab like that, but my OCD self will force me to eventually replace it. And BMW ain't makin' this stuff anymore.

As for stripping down RT's to make naked K's :nono Isn't that what BMW made OEM naked K-Bikes for? :dunno
