Correct Bar End Weights
« on: April 03, 2016, 09:47:26 PM »
I bought Bokobob's '95 K75 Standard and it has the touring handlebar installed.  Do those handlebars have pieces welded inside to accommodate the screws which would hold the bar end in place?  Or, do I need to look for the type bar end weights which have the expandable piece which fit into the handlebar?  I was all set to buy some new grips but glad I didn't, as someone posted the grip diameters for heated grips are the same on each side.  Instead, i ordered a pair of "Grip Puppies" but with my sensitive hand, I feel I need something more than a piece of neoprene on my grips.  I've seen aftermarket end weights reasonably priced.  I have a pair of stock Goldwing weights and the screws but have not attempted to remove the BMW stock grips, nor poke any holes in the ends just yet.  TIA for your suggestions.

greetings...

if the heated grips power wires come out of a drilled hole in the middle if the bars then its most likely you have the bars with the welded threaded insert...

gonna have to getts the allen wrench out and take off what you got and see whats in there... cause i have seen the expanding piece in there too...

never know what others have done before you... i think that bokobob moto is pretty straight... prolly hollow if it has stock grips with no existing bar ends...

i use the cheep progrips with the standard size grip puppy with the big size grip puppy over all that...

id get the pounders in stainless...

I didn't think the K75 needed bar end weights.  Counterbalancer smooths out the vibes and the damper in the steering head damps out head shake.

I have no idea what year or model the handlebars came from.  They may have been on the bike when the PO bought it.  I have service records of the owner before Bokobob who wrote he was the third owner, which makes me the 5th owner.  So, someone might have stuck OEM grips over the heat wires without using bar end weights.  I'll find out on Monday if there are welded inserts in the bars and if my weights will fit the inserts or maybe I'll have to order some weights with the expansion nuts.  Just my opinion, but I believe bar end weights will help in my situation.  Do you know the inside diameter of heated grips?  The bar itself measures 22mm but someone wrote on this forum the heated grips were larger, due to the heat wires.

It would help if you explain who these "someones" are, Whitey.

What symptoms are you getting in your hands, and why do you think weights will cure it? K75's would have to one of the smoothest vibration free bikes I have ridden.

greetings white dog...

you want bar end weights... fine... why... it doesnt matter... cause you want bar end weights... thats all that matters...

so...

nobody knows what you have... we are guessing... you are in possession of the moto... not us... so we ask questions... if you dont answer our questions we caint help you...

so...

1) does this moto have heated grips now...

2) if so do the heated grip wires go through a hole in the handlebars under the dash pad...

3) does this moto have bar weights now... or solid end to the existing rubber grips...

4) post up photos so we can see what you see... some good photos of your existing grips and dash pad and whats under there...

This shows it better. The brass looking one is for non-heated grips. The silver one shows where the heated grip wire is run in the middle.

I read somewhere on this board one should use the same size RH non-heated grip for the LH heated grip and the RH heated grip for the RH heated grip.  I'm going to try the Grip Puppies for now.

The feeling I get in my right hand is a numbing, tingling feeling between my thumb and index finger.  I get relief by placing my thumb on top of the hand grip or just hanging my arm down straight.  I've been told it is an early symptom of "carpel tunnel syndrome."

My bars have the grayish-color grips with closed ends.  Sooner or later they will have to be replaced, I'm sure.  I do have functioning heated grips.

Johnny, it looks as if there is a wire going into the middle of the handlebars.  I'll have to take the panel loose enough to be sure.  I also plan to cut  a small spot in the closed end of the grip, insert a light snake I have and see what the inside of the handlebar looks like.  I'm hoping I find a welded nut not too far from the end.  If so, I may be able to use the bar end weights I have.  Worst case would be to change the screws to a different mm and/or pitch.

Laitch, the name is "White Dog," not "Whitey."

You might be gripping the bars too tightly. This can happen from fatigue or inclement weather. Try a Throttle Rocker or similar on one side.

Following the suggestions given, I looked for a wire going into the handlebars but did not readily see an entrance wire.  I carefully cut a slit in the grip end and pried the grip open enough that I could see inside.  There are 2 wires coming out of the end of the handlebar, brown and black/green and they go to the heater strips.  I buried a 6"screwdriver blade but did not hit anything solid. Thus, bar end weights are not an option on my cycle, unless I give up the heated grips which I would be foolish to do.  Hopefully, the grip puppies will help absorb the vibration I feel and I might be gripping too tightly.  After all, this is a new type ride for me and I've got to get used to it.  I may have to pursue the Bar Snake idea.

The cycle came with a low profile seat but I had 2" of foam added to the driver butt and the whole seat recovered.  Best mod I've ever made on a motorcycle.

mwo74 posted the heated grip bar end hardware for hollow bars...

you just slide the wires in there and tighten them down...

that way you can have bar end wrights with oem heaters...

can put grip puppies on there too...

WD it sounds like Carpal Tunnel as you suspected, you might want to try a neoprene forearm strap which can work. I have a home made throttle lock fitted which allows me to relieve my hand. It is easy to manufacture and use and a lot safer than the OEM. I have posted how to make it, just type in Throttle Lock Home Made in Search.

Thanks Johnny.  Mike and I talked a good while today about the bar end weights.  By the time I buy all the new parts (except handlebar) I was at $360, including new grips.  Don't think I want to go that route right now.  I have Grip Puppies on order.  Gonna see if that gives my right hand any relief.  Martin has pointed me to a project he did which may help me, also.  Youse guys are good!

Separate note:

What does adding weight at the end of the handlebar do?

Nevermind: Supposed to change the frequency of the vibration...
