Final Drive Output Seal - Is this where I went wrong?

Guys,

Recently replaced the output seal on the final drive of a k75, and it is leaking again! I am assuming the issue here is me, I replaced it by levering out the old seal, and tapping in the new one in using the old seal as a drift. It appears to be leaking from the inner edge of the seal. Question 1 would be has anyone successfully done it this way?

I am assuming that I should have separated the crown gear from the cover, put the seal onto the crown gear and then the crown gear back onto the cover. Question 2 would be is this correct or am I missing another step?

How many miles/km's on it.
You could possibly have some bearing wear that it allowing mis-alignment and thus causing the seal to leak.

How many miles/km's on it.
You could possibly have some bearing wear that it allowing mis-alignment and thus causing the seal to leak.

Theres 60k on the clock but could be more on it in reality,

The bearing seemed fine on inspection however I do feel a bit of a grindy sensation from the final drive when riding the bike!

You might have rolled the seal lip when you installed it. Take a close look at the lip. If is rolled under, you may be able to reposition it. I have been installing ring gear seals from the outside for years with good results.

The lip seems unaffected, i might take a picture later if I get a chance. When the seal is in, is it flush with the lip of the cover or does it protrude about a mil? It could be a case of me being a bit too gentle tapping it in!

There is a slight bevel on the outside corner of the seal. I install the seal with the lower edge of the bevel flush with the cover, so the seal does protrude slightly.

Keep in mind that the seal has an outer protective ridge that may look like what is doing the sealing, but the actual seal lip is mostly hidden behind this ridge.

i use zip ties and electrical tape...

cut a zip tie to size... wrap it with electrical tape... pound it in... let the engine idle until the fan comes on... let it cool completely... ready to roll...

johnny I'm a bit confused, was this meant for a different post?

Ive been doing a half hour in the dark every day during the week  :musicboohoo: got the drive off, and seated it in using the old seal as a drift. Interestingly it actually went in further than the lip. I wonder is the bearing not seated fully down? might explain the grinding feeling I get from the back. Anyway let it sit and it was still leaking so I nipped the several bolts that fasten the cover (I had them looser to try to alleviate the grinding) At this stage now it appears to have stopped leaking. I think my seal wasnt driven down enough initially which leaked, and then my bolts werent tightened enough which caused a second leak.

Now to put it back on the bike and see does she hold!

The leak has stopped, now my main worry is the clunky grindy sensation I get at low speeds.
