Final Drive leak, looking for seals
« on: July 01, 2015, 06:09:23 AM »
Hi All,

Have a leak at the final drive, just replaced the crush washer and oil on the final drive and still there is a pool of oil on the bottom of the rim when the bike is left sitting. It appears to be coming from behind the brake disk so im assuming it is a seal that is gone. Can someone point me in the right direction for where to purchase the seals or even the part numbers as im having trouble finding a fiche for that particular part. Any rebuild literature also would be good, I have just ordered a haynes manual but like to see how its done in the real world also

Thanks!

greetings davedrave...

sounds like you in need of a final drive rebuild... generraly the bearing goes whack which takes the seal with it... if this is the case its gonna need a complete rebuild...

i know a guy in california that rebuilds final drives with genuine bmw parts... last one was about $300 abouts 3 years ago... im thinking somebody over there rebuilds them too... just gotta look around...

a talented motobricker with skilled hands and special tools can certainly do it... butts for a few hundert i just had the pro do it so i would be worry free...

shop manuals here... micro fiche here... parts here...

Ring gear seal replacement . . . if I can do it, anyone can.

I got my parts from MaxBMW. Along with a couple other things (see my notes at the link above), you need the "shaft seal," # 1 in the drawing

Thanks guys! I feel like I lucked out with this bike due to the good community around it, can make all the difference!

I would be looking to rebuild it myself if possible, both for the challenge and for the thriftyness :)

All sorted after changing the large seal and O-ring. It was great to get to the bike the next morning and see that she didnt piss the bed!

At a total cost of £30 Elipten, it worked out thriftier... this time  :neener:

My little overnight test. I found it seemed to be weeping at the spline seal but I believe thats a bigger job so I will check it when its off next which will be sooner than later, the splines were bereft of moly so im guessing the lube at the other end of the shaft is lacking also.

All tightened up and time for a beer

Family shot, the Japanese step sister who is going to get more tlc once the brick is in regular use.

Thanks Guys for the direction  :2thumbup:

davedrave,

If you ever get an itch to do the spline seal of your final drive... here's a post that you could bookmark:

I just replaced the oil seal around the pinion gear splines in the final drive unit.  I'm new to motorcycles, new to the K75, new to wrenching and it wasn't that bad.

Wow you really seemed to make it easy! I'm still somewhat daunted, was there much of a leak from that seal?

I didn't have any oil coming out of the final drive-swing arm joint.  I had the final drive unit completely off the bike and noticed a little oil just outside of the oil seal.  Since the replacement seal was only $10 and since I had time on my hands (recovering from an automobile accident) I decided to go for it.

I'm new to motorcycling and motorcycle wrenching.  I think billday said it best... "If I can do it, anyone can" (though, having the right tools certainly helps).  If I had to do it over again, I'd borrow a torque wrench with 250 ft-lb capacity.

davedrave,

p.s.  My son, also from Ames, Iowa, will be in Dublin this Thursday, 7/16.  He's been studying in Spain this summer and found cheap tix on Ryanair for a side trip before returning to the U.S. next week.  If you run across him, say "hi" for me.  Cheers!
