1997 k1100 rs mirror tapping on throttle body.
« on: February 18, 2015, 12:48:27 PM »
Hi all.

I am new to this forum. My name is Bart but username is the Flying Dutchman as I am originally from The Netherlands. (not very original I know... :neener: )

I have just bought a naked K1100rs and it came without mirrors so I bought some online with either an 8 or 10mm adapter. Neither of these fit. Does anyone know what the tapping is. A 6mm bolt is far too small, but the 8 is too big.

I guess it will be a 7 mm, but thought I would ask.

Cheers, Bart.

Greetings Bart, well, to your question..... the RS's came factory with the mirrors attached on the fairing. BUT the throttle/brake body, and the left side clutch perch assy, on the 1100RS's is the same as what was used on the earlier K1 series. According the the parts listings for the K1 mirrors the threaded locking nut is 8mm(part #4)
There are 2 different mirror part #'s.

#1 Left : 51 16 2 308 577
#2 right: 51 16 2 308 578

The parts listing does also note: If you are looking for a taller mirror, we recommend the mirrors from an R1100GS. Does not apply to all models that this mirror fits. Be sure the parts that the mirrors mount to (master cylinder/lever assemblies) are the same before ordering.

greetings flying dutchman...

arie luyendyk will always be the flying dutchman to me...

anyway... welcome to the world famous motobrick.com...

the preferred mirrors of motobrickers everywhere are the ken sean superbike replica gpx mirrors... the glass is optically correct and are robust so they vibrate allot less than others...

right mirror ken sean # 901020...

left mirror ken sean # 901010...

i putts a set of these on the brickus turkus... i drilled out the original mirror holes with a 11/32" drill then tapped them  with a 10mm x 1.25 tap... there wasnt much meat to drill... there was not much meat to thread... went slow and got it right... only 1 chance with the oem holes to getts them drilled and tapped...

they are amazing mirrors... 100% pro in every way... wow... butts since i put these on a k75... do your doo dillergence as the rs eleven hundert may not have the same holes...

here they are... with the fit system blind spot deal on there...

Hey Johnny and Scott.

Thanks very very much for the info. I have been biking since the late 70s. Been through a fair few bikes in my time, but really like the K1100 series of bikes. This is my second naked one. I go for these as I am 6'6" and actually can't ride a K1100 with a fairing as my knees dig into the fairing where it sits around the tank.

My last one was a K1100lt and that already had some mirrors fitted. I ordered some mirrors from ebay (not the best ones I have to admit) and they came with 8 and 10 mm fixings but neither fit. On the clutch body there is only an unthreaded hole so I may just be brave and re-tap both sides to suit the fixings I have.

I will get some images up so that you can see the mess I will have made of it.... :-)

Cheers so far.

In 2013 I did a 2303 mile trip around the UK. I stuck the sat nav over the rev counter side of the instrument cluster.  I could just see the gear counter so that was fine. This was on my K1100lt. It was behind the screen. All I did was to wrap a zipped food bag around it and clipped it into its holder for any rain issues, but as it happens it was all ok re the weather.

That bike at the time had done over 80.000 miles and it was an ex police bike. So it still had the police tragkorbs and radio box on it. By the time I had thrown some saddle bags over the solo seat and loaded my tent on my top box I was ready to go.

Had a brilliant time and the bike never let me down. I only changed it because I wanted a dual seat and bigger tragkorbs so that my partner can come along next time.

Not the best photo. I briefly had them both at the same time. The LT (my old bike ) in the for front and the RS in the background.
