Hello All :)
« on: January 01, 2015, 11:47:23 AM »
Just taken delivery of this beast, rough and ready but a good solid bike, with 92k on the clock. The plan is to just tidy it in general, gunna keep the black theme for now. I want to chop that back end down, the wife wont be getting on the back so its surplus to requirements. If you know of anything I should or shouldn't be doing to it don't be shy, every days a school day and all that  :2thumbup:
A bit about me, I'm a cnc guy of over 20yrs, I've worked with everything from granite/alloy to wood and vinyl, currently working in the signage industry running a little Kongsberg cutter. I'm a big fella married with 2 boys, I was a doorman/bouncer from 15 to 30, getting stabbed for the 3rd time was the last straw!! Took up photography to help me relax, it work, it now pays its own bills  :2thumbup: The next big milestone for me is 50, and I cant wait for it LoL!!

Thanx for the info Mate, Anything else you can tell me just from the image?
Real OEM tells me "10/1989 K589 K 100 LT 87" Any idea what the K589 represents?

Not really sure what my plan for it is just yet, it feels nice, its a lot easier on my knees the old gsxr11 anyway:) The bars have to go though! Bloody huge they are.

(Love the site btw)

Daz.

Thanx for that, on the logbook it says its an LT, it has heated grips, they don't work but they're on there, so I'm still not 100% sure what it is

I wouldn't invest too much time or money into that bike. It's obvious that the bike was a project for the previous owner, and it doesn't appear that the PO was caring given the rattle-can paint, horn mount and rusty bits.

Unless you're aware of a responsible service history I'd assume the bike needs quite a bit of maintenance at its age.

Every thing says it was the Touring model. These bikes are essentially the same other ten what fairing and bars were fitted and final drive ratio. The LT has a hwy gear rear end. The fairings are getting hard to find at the breakers and very expensive so once a LT gets dropped if they don't end up being a insurance write off and going to a breaker they end up getting stripped down like yours.

Bike looks weathered. The grips not functioning is probably corrosion in the switch.  Likely most of the switches will have the same issue.

As for bars I'd look for k100 RS bars. They are probably what your looking for and most RS also got heated grips so they will be plug and play with your existing controls.  Do a little research as heated bars and non heated bars are different.

Solo seat conversions: This by far is one of the nicest done conversions I have ever seen on a K

I'd start by being a realist. It's a beater and if your looking for a road warrior that's what you have. It's never going to be financially worth a full restoration so if you go that route understand that it's very unlikely you will recover what you put into it from a resale point of view. That said it may have been a well loved steed and maintained till it hit the ground and be good transportation.

I'd start by seeing what the fluilds look like....clean there is good reason to believe its got some life left in it. Rubber bits are where you need to expect problems. Vacuum leaks cause havoc with these bikes. Expect to replace all the fuel lines, vacume lines, injector ORings, vent tubes and possibly the throttle boots/bushings.
Cafe it and have fun.
Welcome to Motobrick.

Thanx for that Lads. I know its service history, it was owned by a back patch club type if you know what I mean, and they don't like a member to be seen broke down at the side of the road so they're quite well regimented on the maintenance side of things.

It was never gunna become a full resto, just want it to be a good solid old bus! Its not my 1st bike by a long way and its not the only build we have going on, its just my 1st K. Current builds are a blasted XJ650 Turbo and a KLE500. My last completed build was a triumph speedtona 955i, after that I said I would never have another fuel injected bike, but you know how it goes when you say never again!!!

Hi Bettyswolloks,
Not sure if you've checked out any of Chris Harris' videos on the K bikes but you might enjoy them. "affordablebeemerservices.com" or just google him. Ex-Beemerdealership mechanic...very helpful. One of the things that comes to mind is fork polishing with 0000 steel wool, assuming that is rust/ corrosion I'm looking at. This was one of Chris' recommendations on a review of an LT he had in the shop. That and fork gators...I kinda think the gators suit these bikes, others think they're ugly as hell. They do the job. I think your bike is a thing of beauty. Too perfect scares me a bit. The first scratch'll kill ya'!!
