BMW OIL FILTER REPAIR KIT

Hello,
I want to offer an oil change to my old K100RT. Searching by part number, I found the oil filter for around 10€ and a kit for more than double that. The kit contains 4 o-rings. Can someone tell me what these are for? Don't you just unscrew the old filter and screw on the new one?

just a guess... without part numbers its just a guess...

oil fill cap... oil drain plug... oil filter hatch o ring... oil filter o ring... butts i think the oil filter already gotts it...

IIRC, those kits have only 1 large rubber o-ring for the filter cover, the others are alu crush rings for engine oil drain, trans drain and/or fd drain, and a couple of others that don't fit our K's.

Sorry I should have read more before posting. The part number led me to a filter that resembles an ordinary car filter and I presumed it would be the same job to do. I didn't even realise that the filter was hidden away like that. So it seems I need a filter with no paint on it and a tool that takes a socket to get in on/off. Thanks

I use a standard Bosch oil filter, it is painted black, never had issues with the paint coming off. Do stay away from the Fram filters that have the grip coating on them.
It does have a label stuck to it that I do peel off. Not that I have ever had one come off prior to my removing them 1st.
Yes a filter wrench does help the job go easier, but beware that some "generic" filter tools that fit the end of the filter have too thick of a side wall and won't fit into the opening of the pan bottom.
You can find filter wrenches that will fit without paying the $$ that BMW would want for the same tool, search the lieberry here on this site.

I had a plastic oil filter socket that didn't quite clear the opening but I took a file to the outer edge and made it work

Ordered the OC91 Knecht/Mahle oil filter and the LX75 air filter for 32€ delivered. Opening the oil filter box I found the o-rings and joints were included. For once  :clap:I actually won something!

I was just performing an oil and oil filter replacement, drained the oil and as I took off the filter cover this (see pics attached) rubber ring dropped out of the sump.  It's not the cover o-ring.  Does anyone know what it is?

I think I've solved it.  It looks like it's the seal of the filter itself, probably from the filter before last.

If you remove a spin-on oil filter from any vehicle always check to ensure the gasket is still attached to the old oil filter.  That extra gasket can prevent a good seal and oil can leak out quickly.  Probably not as much of an issue on a K bike where the filter is inside the pan itself but can be catastrophic on another vehicle, as a few people I know can attest.

While it may not be catastrophic from a leak stand point, it will not be good from a oil supply pressure standpoint.

This happened once on my Subaru, it was determined to pump all the oil out quickly.  I spent more time cleaning up than whole oil change and removing the left over seal afterward.

It can be catastrophic because of loss of oil pressure, even though the oil stays in the sump.
