Pre 05/85 Fuel Pump
« on: June 14, 2011, 02:15:47 AM »
Any one got a pic of one on file?  I ordered via phone a new screen for my 02/85 RS and got one[16121455126] I can't use.  Much smaller diameter pump.  My pump has nuts on studs for wires vs spade connectors, and a black nylon type 'L' shaped bag filter on protrusion about the diameter of a nickel.  Has one seam open.  Can those be 'welded' w/ hot iron?

I'd read of Napa replacement fuel pumps and a description of hose shims to go around new pump to vibration dampener, mine doesn't have those, so thought it was a BMW pump.

I'll snap a few shots of my mess while at hanger tomorrow.

Thanks, still confused.  Doesn't really matter as there's no way I'm going to pay for a BMW pump if I can get the NAPA cheapie.  You graciously showed me I have at least a BMW original issue for some year.  I got confused as Max fiche showed the filter I got for 05/85 and later, but earlier NLA, as is pump according to my dealer.  W/ fatter replacement costing about $300 new and needing a $70 fatter vib dampner, it's a no brainer.

Did find filter at local auto parts haus.  Am going to offer the one I can't use on F/S forum here, since I shop my dealer [150 miles] by phone and am too embarrassed to send any more stuff back, lol.  I'm feeding a 30 yr old airhead too.

One more question:  What does the hose fitting on the filter I can't use go to?

Not quite sure what you're talking about here....

In your pic you posted, the '93 and earlier pump has the filter screen on bottom of pump w/ black hose running up out of view.  I got that same filter [that I can't use]and am curious where the hose goes to?

Apparently these two pumps are interchangeable if one has the correct size dampener?

The hose goes to an aluminum tube that is attached to the top of the tank then goes out of the tank at the rear beneath the tank into a small plastic container which draind  to the road  near and below the right rear footpeg.

The filters are interchangeable.  Replacement ones are available through many outlets.  The one I have is a "Fuel Miser" and one of the larger ones in the K100 and a small one in the K75.  Both run well

Hi, Awshucks,
I have an early fuel pump strainer, the one without the hose connection.  They are NLA from BMW, but are available from Beemer Boneyard for around $20, if I remember correctly.  As I've decided to not rehabilitate the early '85 K100RT I have, I'll send you the strainer (new) for $20, shipping included, if I can find it!  It works with the earlier, 52mm fuel pump, not the later 43mm pump.

Thank you for your offer.  I've got a filter from local auto parts haus for just under $10.  The 19mm spigot fastening point for lack of better terms, seems to have about 1/4" longer protusion on short side,  will roll those dice, proper BMW # replacement, BMW is extremely proud of, lol.

This whole escapade has been a learning experience for me.  #1, I have a later issue fuel pump w/ approx 1.700" OD.  The proper fuel pump for my yr and model is about 2.230" OD [Need confirmation, going off filter dia.]

The NAPA replacement is not available to me, but Advance Auto is.  It has an OD of 1.430" [approx, I didn't mike it, yet, 80 miles and $63 away.]

The NAPA 1030 hose has approx ID of 1.430" [great] but an OD of 1.900" [not great].  BMW sells two diff dampeners for the two diff pumps, @ about $70 ea.

I'm currently working on getting either alum or brass collars made up from buddy w/ CNC shop to eliminate NAPA hose, ultimate result; bushings w/ shrink fit [ID]to !.430" [apprx] OD Advance Auto E-2042 fuel pump, and two choices of OD to match the two diameters of 'dampeners' for either original 'fat' fuel pumps or my 'latter' issue.

During my USN stint, '66-'70 we cut a gazillion wearing rings [bronze] for pumps.  We 'shrunk fit' stuff.  I think a few thousandths in alum will work fine for K bike cheap fuel pump replacements.

Here's my goal.  We all need goals, lol. I'm going to: get Adv Auto E-2042 pump, mike it exact, get price for collar from my CNC buddy, one ID, two OD's, heat from hair dryer, heat gun, whatever, and will fit your dampener ring, Done deal.  Btw, my NAPA store has 4' of 1030 hose, will only sell it by the foot at $12 per.

Whadda ya think, Duck?  Was gonna pm all this to you, will pass these onto you for my cost [I'm still a 'Pub] if you think there's enough interest.  I expect them to be real cheap.  AFAIK, you appear to be the 'snobum' of the K's?

I will need the favor of someone 'miking' a 52 mm pump body.  That and the actual diameter of AA replacements are the only critical ones for the shrink fits.  I'll get the AA in the next day or so, then I can get the ball rolling.

Which size?  Both will be same price, no doubt.  52mm or 43mm ?
