New Guy to Posting.....

I just signed up today. Although I am computer literate I don't post anything.  I own a couple of k bikes currently and have owned a few others over the years.. I ride motorcycles (street bikes) almost every day. Luckily the weather permits where I am from, thank God. I am not wealthy by a long shot but I own 4 bikes currently. I have owned and ridden lots of different bikes (44) over the years. I have a love/hate relationship with my two K's. I only hate them when something goes wrong and I have to work on them. 

I have read some posts on this website over the last year or so and the folks seem very helpful. I am impressed with the camaraderie of the BMW owners and their posts.  I own a popular American made V-Twin also (I won't say what brand so as not to offend anyone in my first post) and have visited some of their chat sites. What a bunch of Retards.  If you are not sure about the topic then don't write anything.. Am I right ??

I am currently working on my K1100LT and putting a clutch and a couple new seals in it. I did it on a K100RT a while back but this one has ABS. It appears that it is going to be much more difficult.. Has anyone messed with that big ABS gizmo ??

Can I presume that you are working on a '94 or later LT with ABSII?

Yes, you can do the job without removing the ABS pump/controller, I have done it both ways, and believe me, it is much easier to remove the transmission without that ABS controller hanging in the way.   

You only have the multi-pin plug on the front side, and 4 wires in the wiring box. The cover of the box can be removed, though it is intended to be a "single" use cover, you can re-use it so long as you seal the "hole" you have to make to remove it.
I think there are some pics here on this forum that show the cover and where the hole needs to be to remove the cover.
Other than this little bit of wiring, it's then just 4 brake line connections, and a couple of mounting screws. You do not need to remove the electronics part from the pump part, it can stay as one piece.

Here's an image of the "catch" that keeps the cover on. The cover slides vertically up to remove.

I pulled one of those ABS gizmos out earlier this year and put a working second hand one in in order to fix my ABS fault. Took about two hours all told from starting the job to riding the bike down the street afterwards. If you hit any snags, there are plenty if folk on here who have done the same so don't be afraid to holler.

My other fear is that when I get it done, will it be a big deal to bleed the system ??  My dealer said it takes a special machine to bleed the system.  It mimics a panic stop and a need for the abs to go on while you simultaneously bleed the brakes. I am not against taking it to a dealer. But it is my nature to attempt to do it myself first. And I am a bit of a cheapskate too.. haha

Not saying it's bunk, but I've had my total brake system disassembled and empty, bled with a heavy duty vacuum pump(1st the abs unit, then the callipers) and have had no issues with soft brakes, or abs not working.......

Now the system design on my old pick-up, that's another story......

I use one of these to change the brake fluid and drain the gas tanks on my bikes.  It also makes oil changes on my cars easy by pulling the oil out through the dipstick tube.

To flush and change the brake system you connect the hose to the bleed fitting, pump up a vacuum, open the bleeder and keep the reservoir full until all the old brake fluid has been pulled out.

Bleeding the system is easy to do by yourself. There's instructions in the lieberry as far as I remember. I just can't remember which they say to do first - ABS unit then calipers I think.

That is great you guys.  Thanks so so much for your help. The only question I have now is that link opened up to the Defender Website..  But I did not see what you are looking at. Is it some sort of vacuum pump ??? It sounds like a great idea.
My love hate relationship has once again turned to love.  K bikes are awesome. I ride an old 85 K 100RT every day to work. I bought it for $1100 about 2 years ago. It had 91k on the speedo and it was broken, (stuck) The owner said it had broken long ago but that it was the bikes 2nd speedo.  I asked him to estimate the actual mileage and he just smiled and said " a lot". It smokes on startup but runs great and the BMW fairings are wonderful in foul weather.

Scott, thanks for getting it right.

Those pumps are the bomb.  I use one at work to change oil on sailboat diesels, and I have one at home.  Worth every penny.  Defender's price is a good one.

One last note, you will need a foot or so of rubber vacuum hose to adapt the pump's hose to the bleed fitting.  The pump comes with hard plastic vacuum hoses and they don't stretch to seal on the bleeder.
