Bouncing Fuel Gauge

Is there any way of adding oil into the fuel gauge to dampen it?
If the bike is stationary the needle settles, but if the petrol is slopping about in the tank the needle reflects this by bouncing around.

The fuel gauge on a K-bike is electrical, not mechanical.  So, oil damping is not possible.  You have to seek electrical damping.  Read this document which will show an addition to the fuel gauge that will dampen the needle.

I didn't know that. My gauge used to be damped but recently its become un-damped - could this just be caused by dirty electrical connections?

There is a good chance that the contacts are dirty and should be cleaned.  The connectors BMW uses are very similar to computer disk drive connectors; they do not tolerate the environment well.

Wouldn't dirty contacts make it less sensitive?
My problem is that's its so acurate / sensitive its reflecting every wave the petrol makes.
I need the gauge to be slower in its reading.
