Corbin Seat too high on K11rs
« on: September 01, 2014, 12:16:36 PM »
I picked up a used Corbin seat online, I think it's a Dual Tour. I used all the hardware from my stock seat, everything fits, the same holes, etc, but the seat sits about an inch higher, there's a pretty big gap between the tank and the front of the seat and it teeter-totters front to back. I can't figure it out, maybe the rubber feet need to be cut down or possibly the arm on the hinge needs to be shorter, I don't know, something's not right. I've attached some pictures, you can see the gaps.
Anybody have any experience with this?
Thanks!

all corbins are made on their own proprietary seat pan...

they had 3 seat pans... two were for the standard height seat with one that rides high on the frame rails and one that rides low on the frame rails... and then there was the low seat option which is different all together...

Johnny's right.  the seat pan is proprietary and made of fibreglass.  It's not a perfect fit.  I have the same seat on my bike and it does take quite a bit of fiddling to get correct.  The gap between the seat nose and tank is wide; no helping that.  I also see you have the same large gap at the back, between the seat and tail;  I've not found an adjustment that lowers the rear of the seat and closes that gap.  Check to see whether the seat is perfectly centered on the frame.  Check the gap between the seat and the side of the tail piece, right where the seat profile makes the corner bend.  There should be equal space on either side of the seat.  You'll need to fiddle with the rear hinge to get that adjusted.

The rocking could be because you are missing bumpers on the frame and seat pan that stabilize the seat pan.  For reference, there is one bumper on the frame near the front hinge.  There are three bumpers on the left side of seat pan, one near the seat catch, one near the front and one directly above the rear hinge.  Also, there is one final bumper on the seat pan on the right side directly above the rear hinge.

one time... when i hated corbin... well actually always hated corbin... i removed the rubber bumpers... got some clear vinyl hose about 1-1/4 inside diameter... slit it down the middle and slipped it over the frame rails... that made it lower and i still have something between the frame rails and the seat pan... always gotts the taint pinch with the corbin... taint pinch = misery...

butts in the end the corbin never worked for us... i was ready to cut off my legs at 50 miles...

You need the hinges from a K100, which is lower.

Thanks for the info, I believe all my bumpers are there, but I'll double-check. If I understand you and Johnny correctly I have the high rail seat design, and i'm gonna need to get creative if I'm gonna make it better. I'd like to try the clear vinyl hose idea, but still thinking there's a hardware fix. Perhaps as Inge says, the hinges from a K100, which is lower?

if your seat opens smoothly all the way without hitting the painted parts on the hinged side you proally gotts the right hinges...

here is the concept... i would double check the part numbers... i bet corbin didnt even getts that right...

Thanks Johnny, that's awesome, I appreciate your colourful mark-up notes.

One piece of valuable intel is in the top right corner. It says if you have a '93 or newer, you need to order older hinges! I knew it.

Well, I finally got my Corbin to sit lower. I have to say everybody's valuable input was appreciated and accurate. I did in fact need to use hinges from an earlier K100 as was suggested by Inge K and confirmed by the Corbin instructions and picture that Jonny sent me. I found the necessary hardware online (used), re-installed the seat and it no longer rocks front-to-back, there's no gap between the seat and the tank and it does sit a little lower now but still not quite as low as the stock seat.

That said, every time I open the seat compartment it fouls the plastic side cover and pops it off, just like Jonny said it would, so lesson learned. Overall, I'm finding it comfortable, but for solo riding I'd like to find something that seats me even lower with still some comfort. Open to suggestions, and yes I have read the other threads regarding the Russels. If I had a stock seat pan I would definitely consider sending it away for a custom seat. Thanks again everyone!

Corbin only had 3 seat pans, and one of them was warped.  Corbin (Mike) refused to admit it, preferred to handle the problem by screaming obscenities at the customer but his employees were aware of the problem.  If you still have trouble and can find a stock seat pan, its pretty easy to pull the foam/cover off the defective pan and put it on the stock one.
