Strange smell with engine braking
« on: May 29, 2014, 01:14:25 PM »
Hello,
I get a strange burning smell briefly, when engine braking at low speeds on my 84 k100rt. I say at low speed, maybe it just gets blown away at high speed before I can smell it. Could it be the clutch?

No, I don't think so. I once machined some Tufnol on a lathe many years ago. It reminds me of that smell.

If you're riding or slipping the clutch when you engine brake, then yes it is the clutch that is burning up.  K bikes have a dry clutch, just like a car and the K-bike clutch does not like to be slipped as one would with a wet clutch found in most other motorcycles.

No, I'm not touching the clutch at all when that happens. In that case, I'm assuming that there is clutch slip when engine braking. But if that were true, surely I'd notice clutch slip while accelerating? Could it be something to do with the fact that under acceleration, the crankshaft provides the force and the rest of the bike the resistance, while under engine braking the reverse is true?

Not Likely.  The clutch plate and pressure plate should react the same under load regardless of which direction.
