tragkorb hinge repair?

Hi again!
I've got the genuine colour coded tragkorbs on my '95 1100LT, and the hinges have split  :musicboohoo:

Read an old post where the guy said he'd got repair kits for the same problem, I've tried to find them but no joy!

Are they still available? each case has 2 hinges, they are basically just strips of plastic that slide into holders on the case and lid: I'd assume some form of kit is available as it must be very common....rubbish design to blame!

FWIW, I've just repaired one tragkorb by gluing/rivetting strips of 1" wide webbing strap onto the broken hinge, seems ok but I'd rather have new ones  :2thumbup:

I've just painted one of my tragkorbs and will be painting the other one in the next few days so I'd be keen to know if the hinges can be sourced as mine are pretty battered.

Local dealer should be able to get them. I bought a pair just to have on hand. I think they were $5us each.

I always have an extra pair in my top case....I've had them fail with full cases and its not fun.

I've also considered putting a pilot screw through the hinge/case to prevent them from shifting -- the outer section  tends to slip so that the two outer and inner sections become misaligned. Anybody tried that?

I had to batter my hinges off with a hammer and a flat chisel to try and avoid breaking them. They were stuck solid and I had to batter them on again when refitting!

I always use pure silicone spray prior to install. I've always had good luck with a wood block and rubber mallet getting them on and off.

finished repair:
I've got huge roll of webbing strap as stated, its 25mm x 4mm roughly. I sprayed contact glue to both surfaces, and inside the 'loop' of the webbing. I then rivetted it to the case and lid, then applied more glue and added a second strip of webbing, as shown: not got a clue how long it will last, but I'm hoping for ever!

Looks like a bit late but mine is another vote for just getting the BMW ones, cheap and readily available. Besides the ones you are having troubles with are probably original 20 year old ones which have served their purpose well.

True, but the stuff I used was all sat in the shed....so nil cost to me!  :clap:

Why replace it with something cheap that's going to break again at the worst possible time?  I did mine with brass hinges 20 years ago and haven't messed with them since.  Know of one fellow who used a piano hinge, even better.

Hi Chaos: Piano hinge was my first thought  :2thumbup:
But as I said, I've got rolls and rolls of webbing (always knew it would come in useful one day!) and the rivets were leftovers from when I made my own aluminium top box, the spray glue just appeared one day....
I reckon my own repair will last forever, as the webbing will never wear out, I've not just saved myself £25 but got the satisfaction of making my own parts: thats the best bit!
