Alarm

Is the alarm on my 87LT worth a darn or should I remove it? Is it reliable? Can it be removed?

I could dig thru the bmw diagrams to be sure of easy removal, but if it's not working I'd pull it and ditch it. If it's working and by chance your insurance co is offering you a premium discount for having it, I'd consider keeping it. It's not hurting anything.

I think I figured the whole thing out. The plunger switch under the seat is the culprit. A few strips of duct tape on the inside of the cover the plunger pokes through and I was on my way. This keeps the plunger pushed all the way in.The plunger on the switch must be right at its limits so the engine would occasionally cut out. Home is a couple hrs ride from here so later today should prove if I'm right.

I just rode about 40 miles and the cutting out seems to have ceased. The ride home is 60 miles so hopefully it won't act up then. We'll see!

Would you see if the factory alarm can be removed. It acted up again last night. I'm worried about being in the middle of nowhere and having problems with some obscure switch. Thanks Al

If you got the factory alarm, it won't affect the engine behaviour....it have only a alarm function.
You have to look elsewhere for your engine running problem.

And it won't make any problems to disconnect it........on/off key-switch you find on the left hand
side of the relay Box.

That looks like what I have. If I make sure that plunger is all the way down it runs, if the seat is up/open it won't run.

According to BMW own wiring diagrams this alarm isn't connected to any wiring that would affect engine
running..........could be that the alarm system is modded.

On models that didn't use this switch (alarm mounted in the ducktail), it was disabled with a 10x1mm cap nut.

Thanks for looking at the factory diagrams. I'll be back next Sat so I'll investigate further then.

Scott, I've decided to remove the alarm if its not too difficult. One less thing to figure into the equation. I'm seriously frustrated. The thing quit a month ago, been sitting at a shop the whole time. Still not fixed and the shop owner told me to come and get as he does not know how to fix it. Al

Al, if it not working when I get back June 1, holler, I can help you out by at least looking at it.  I have lots of experience in things that don't run, not saying I can fix it, but at least look at it, good as you have now.

You know where I live and my number
