K75S takes off like a rocket when I twist it hard
« on: October 10, 2013, 10:50:39 PM »
Is this normal for these K bikes?

I've noticed something peculiar with my K75 when I am on the road around 60-65mph on 5th gear, and I twist hard the throttle to pass a vehicle the bike slowly picks up speed and suddenly (never looked) it reaches a certain speed/rpm and it just takes off like a rocket and several times it scared the crap out of me. :mbird

if you want it to take off like a rocket sooner... downshift and twist hard on the throttle...

The engine doesn't hit it's peak HP until somewhere around 7K and the HP curve, as I recall, is pretty steep as it's getting to the peak.
At 65 mph in 5th the engine is "loafing" at 4-5K

This means that when you add throttle at 5 K the power comes on gradually until you hit the steep part of the curve. To me it feels like a turbo charged engine getting into it's boost range.

As Jonny says, go down to 4th or even 3rd then twist, you'll hit rocket mode much sooner.

This sounds like fun! I don't usually wind mine up too hard (4 - 6k max) but if it stays dry this w/e I think I'll give mine some welly and see what happens. Stupidly I've always though my 75S a bit sluggish but I suppose I just wasn't winding the bag out of it. Hopefully post result next week.

I guess if I shift down to 4th and twist it, the response would be much more rapid then just twisting cruising on 5th gear.

I'll try it (gradually), not a speed demon, I just enjoy my rides and don't want to spoil it.

I have a rocket bike but this one just took me by SURPRISE. :riding:

My 1100LT I drive it pretty conservative and shift around 4k. The motor has plenty of power between 2-4k to move with the surrounding traffic so I rarely go past that. 4k in 5th is 65ish (LT has a 2.75 hwy gear set).

Get up to 4500 RPM its a whole different bike! It smothes out and yeah...its like the waste gate just closed on a turbo and the elevator music changes to whaling guitars. Makes you want to lower the windshield and lay on the tank. I try to act my age and stay out of trouble

 Funny story:

My Cousin is a Harley rider and has a brand new 2013 Ultra Classic. It really is a nice bike just not my style.  He does stereo type Harley riders giving me crap and more so since we are kin. Its all good.

I go for a ride with him a couple weeks back and some of the folks he rides with. Good people. Hand a nice ride other then they like camping in the fast lane with a posted 70mph at 65mph.  That drove me nuts.

So we stop for lunch and honestly its been years since we hung out. We en up talking bikes for a bit.

Him "So do you like that riding position?, looks like it would get uncomfortable. Can you put hwy pegs on it"

Me "Yeah works for me, Got a good view of whats happening and you can lay forward some on it in the curves but I'd like to try some bars that are not as swept back and see how that feels."

My bikes like riding a recliner, Just sit back and enjoy. How much power has it got (Harley riders quote Torque not hp?!?!?)?"

Me: " Its an 1100 cc with 100hp 77 Tq."

"Ohh yeah I got 1700 with 106 ftlb"

I didn't point out my bike is 600ish lb and his is 900lb plus what ever the Farkles he has added and he and his size 17's (hes 6'6") have about 75lb on me to boot.  :hehehe

So he's riding sweep and I hang back with him. We got caught at a light after a gas stop It was well past orange so I stopped. He had just taken off his 2way when we tanked on our last leg back so the lead didn't know we didn't make the light.

"Hay we are going to need to catch up to them since I cant let them know we didnt make the light"

They had a good 1/2 mile on us once we got a break in traffic.

Ok! Layed into it once we got a clear spot to turn to catch up. I glanced down to see and the needle around 100 (probably 95 tops know my speedo is off a good bit) as I reel them in. I'm already off the throttle and start braking trying to scrub off speed to drop in behind the group when I see how far back he was....he was a bit surprised how fast my old K took off.  :riding:

He hasn't given me much crap since LOL

My K75 is a pretty sedate ride up to about 5000 rpm.  Knock her down a gear or two and run 5-7k+ and it feels like a different bike.  Kinda freaked me out the first time I got into the Fun Zone!!

It a crazy experience when you first take a a liter bike up to redline in 2nd gear.  The RPMs are 8k-10k and speed is around 100mph.  Then you realize that you are only in 2nd.

I was riding my Katana 1100 and had to make a left turn onto the freeway.  There was nothing in the near lanes, but there were some trucks in the far lanes where I was going.  Seems like there was plenty of room I just needed to be quick.  I across the near lanes, shift into 2nd, turn into the lane and twist the throttle.  A few seconds later I am going over 90 in 2nd.  The trucks are little dots in my mirrors.

I am looking forward to finding out what my new K1100 is like on its way to redline.
