Valve adjustment on K1100 engines - necessary?
« on: September 19, 2013, 11:48:35 AM »
I watched a Youtube video recently from Chris from Affordable BMW service. He stated that K100's will develop tight valves but that he's never seen a K1100 do the same. He went on to say that you will sometimes find 1100's with loose valves but that doesn't hurt anything. He went so far as to say that if a tech wants to do a valve adjustment on the 1100, he's trying to pad the bill - it's unnecessary.

I'm a relative newbie. I bought my '93 1100rs last August. What has been the collective experiece among motobrickers? I don't want to do anything I don't have to, but I've dealt with replacing burnt valves on other bikes I've owned and I'd rather not go down that road again.

Thanks Guys,

Charlie

The adjustment may be unnecessary, but the check is not. The interval is long, anyhow. 15k miles.

The bike is new to you so you should have it checked. That will give you a base line of information to work with. Buy the tools and do it yourself. There is a guy that makes the valve adjustment tools and sells them online for much less that what BMW is asking. Maybe someone here can remember his name and how to contact him.

I have the tools and am familiar with the procedure. The bike runs very well now that I've replaced some rotted 20 year old rubber in the induction system. Just for my peace of mind, I'm going to pop the valve cover and check clearances.

The guy's name is Chris Harris. He owns a shop in New Hampshire http://www.affordablebeemerservices.com He's an ex BMW dealership tech and seems to me to know whereof he speaks. Has a lot of videos on Youtube covering service on K Bikes, Airheads, Oilheads, etc. I'm not affiliated with him or his business, I've only visited the site and watched his videos.

Thanks,

Charlie

The check is easy, and uses a feeler gauge set and a 10 mm socket. The adjustment needs special tools. I think the 1100 needs the cams pulled, but not 100% on that.

Yes you are correct about the 1100's. The valves may be checked, but to replace buckets for adjustment the cams must be removed. So those "adjustment tools" that work on the 2V motors will not work on the 1100 motors. I can't say about the 4V K100's as I've not worked on one.

And yes, the valves can go too tight. I burned 2 of them at 25K miles on my '97. Needless to say the "stealer" didn't do any further work on my bike after that.....

the guy might be (half) right with the 2Vīs (after 60tsd Km not very much happens anymore)
but 4V engines are known for burned exhaust valves because of ignorance and wrong statements just like his ones

do yourself (and your K) a favour and check it.asap
after 15/ 20 tsd Km again - than you know the condition of you engine t

Itīs not that difficult to check - adjusting is somthing else
