fuel pump
« on: September 05, 2013, 09:14:35 PM »
So, my bike and i had a disagreement. It wanted to lay down and I wanted to stay up. I hit an unseen mud/moss patch 20 feet down my driveway as I shifted into 2nd, was high sided and it won. More damage to me than the bike. Broken bone in the shoulder, 6 weeks in a sling, no riding during some of the nicest weather. I am now a big fan of helmets ( I was wearing one, otherwise I'd still be lying there), crash bars (saved the bike from some nasty rash), and armor (if I had it, it probably would have hurt but not broke). As an aside, then I'll stop ranting, not only did this cost me 6 weeks of no riding but about $1000 in Dr.'s bills!

However, I couldn't restart the bike. No usual fuel pump whine. i thought maybe I jarred the relay loose or something. Turns out the fuel pump is bound up and only makes a dull "thunk" instead of that lovely whine. What the f---. Mounted in a rubber damper inside a tank full of fuel I would have thought it would fare better.

Thoughts?

Well, I have heard of some rehab that you may be able to save your pump.

Try and power the pump with reversed polarity.(backwards....) This may free up what ever is binding it.

The other thing you may try is soak it in some techron for a day or so if you can get the pump out of the bike.

Thanks, I'll try both as the pump is out.

Also, while it's apart, take a close look at the FP wires.  Especially where they go through the sending unit.

My wires were missing a lot of insulation, and were really rotten all the way to the sending unit.

I took the factory screen off on 2 pumps, one was a spare for a guy ,was able to manually reverse the vanes through the bottom of the pump.we sucked the remaining rust bits and crap out of the tank,he got a new strainer cuz it was torn and  he is still runnin. If you are careful with the screen you can reuse, his were sitting for a few years before he got bikes.
