3 - 2 drops out
« on: September 02, 2013, 11:26:43 PM »
Just finished my '95-K11 rebuild. Bought as a project. Bike survived Hurricane Dennis, found in the garage buried in schmegg,(Technical for; salt, water, sand, marsh, dead things, oil) for about 4 days @100F 110% humidity. Bike turned into a rusteration. Now the bike is running quite well. Have slowly gone though a 'break in' over the last month so to minimize any $urpri$e(s). Took around the block today to get the feel of it. The power and response were all there at the throttle. The bike started cold and warmed up like textbook.
While riding i came to a stop and the idle was low and rough, like the 2 and 3 injectors were dropped. The tach was dead as well. Spedo was good, lights, turns, radio all good. Killed the engine, restarted, all was fine. Rode around for another 10,12 minutes happened again.  Tach, rough idle, low power, sluggish response.
Whats been replaced: Main and Engine wiring harnesses, Fuel pump and filter, fuel lines(all), Alternator, Battery, light bulbs (all), fuses(all), gaskets(all), seals(all), fluids(all).
Question:
Could the TPS be off?
Could the timing be off ?
Bad injectors,
Bad Coil(s) ???
worry worry worry . . . .  need more scotch !

Welcome to Motobrick,

Right off, I can say that the tach gets it signal ground from the motronic connection for cyl #1/4 coil pack. If it is dropping out either 1. the motronic isn't responding to the HES signal of motor rotation, or 2. the HES isn't sending signal of motor rotation. 3. The coil pack for cyl's #1/4 is intermittently shorting out.

Did you replace the HES sensors? or replace the Motronic? or replace the coil packs?

Was the bike submerged in the water? or just get really wet.

The K was submerged, The cluster was a rust bucket, Innards were replaced ('94). I checked the  oils before i  bought the bike. None of the oils showed water, no milky goo, no clumps, same for the tranny, diff, wheels, and forks. The exhaust was packed solid (schmegg). The block was a goner $suprize! No 3 had 1/8 pits on the wall, most of the deck was gone, (block w/pistons) was replaced. Crank from original was kept and original mains and rod bearings were ultra sonically cleaned and installed. The head was pack solid in all the exhaust ports. The intakes looked new. The breather box was clean, some fine dust that was all. The HES had a little rust on the base, but, electric check showed good. HES was sonically cleaned using optical grade sand (this is very clean uniform size and shape) at about 35C for 5minutes. rinsed with glycol and allowed to dry for 3 days. rechecked and installed. Bike stared on first try.

How does one check the coil pack ? one of the terminals in the 2-3 was very difficult to clean.

Wow!  It sounds like you just started with a rusty frame and built a bike.  We're going to need pictures. ... before and after.

Just tried forcing the problem to be constant. The missing is more pronounced when starting cold. Jiggle test on the coil connection did not change the problem. Did notice the plugs do not have a strong spark, definite fuel fouling issue on all 4, none stand out any worse that the others.
ordered replacement coils. Should be Friday. Well at least a Friday.

All the intermittent issues I had with my 95 ended up being dirty connection on the Motronic. I cleaned it and packed it with die electric grease and its been happy for 2,000 miles so far.

Even without a hurricane, it's worth doing a thorough cleaning/dielectric greasing of all the connections. I did it on my k75. Solved a couple intermittent problems.

Trying to sea (joke), if temp could be an issue. So i just got back and park it in the shed for the day. outside temp is about 99 in the shade so 105 on the road. Prob is persistent and it goes away on restart but returns moments later. I am going to re-clean and grease the connections for the HES and Motronic. I've greased the coils yesterday. The tach is now not dropping out. Thusis I conclude such that Scott has foretold the HES is not getting a good signal either by ground, Moto, none by aire. Love dem puns.

P U N spelled backwards : NUP and anup is anup.

Due have pics of before and after will post soon. Gota get m organized.

Just a quick up date.
Well i be humbled and in a state of humility. Scott is almost correct, the following is what was found; but, first let me thank ya'll fer helpn me keep my sanity.
Several vac leaks,(replaced hoses and adjusted clamps.)
Used a ground strap to replace the spade connector on the Motronic (noticed a big diff in Idle).
Both coils were replaced with used but known to be working.
Throttle body completely out of sync (throttle plates and bypass), took the better part of 4 days to get right, Much thankx to workshop notes, could not have done it alone.
Replaced sparking plugs with new and re-gaped.
Built an LED tester for the Hall sensor and re timed. It was off by 10 degrees BTDC. (the micrometer method may have some flaws)
Now Idle is about 950 +/- 30. Response is very good. Even with sudden release.
w/Sync Pro adjusted throttle plates then bypass. Held Idle at 1500.
Op temp came down to a little past centre-Fan off, to 3/4-Fan On.
And Oh every connection I could find got a little dab o dielectric grease.
Looks like a great weekend commin this a way. Probably get to Austin for a visit.

Again ! Much weed lots a grass.
