Gear problem.
« on: August 09, 2013, 04:30:41 AM »

So I just got a 1995 K1100LT a couple of weeks ago. Rode it for around 1 000 kms without a hitch, until yesterday.

I was shifting up from first to second when the bike just lost drive. Downshifting to 1st didn't help. The gear feels like it's changing, and the gear indicator shows a gear, but when I let go of the clutch, nothing happens. Well, actually, when it's parked you can kind of feel something when you release the clutch.

To non-technical me it feels like something just doesn't engage properly in the gearbox, but what do I know?

I'm going to talk to the dealer today, but I thought I'd also ask you lot.

Oh, hi, by the way. I'm Jani, and this is my first post after some semi-serious lurking.

Any ideas?

I'm thinking of 3 possibilities at the moment.

1. Part of the drive shaft could have broke. I have heard of others have either broke one of the u-joints or one of the u-joint yokes.

2. There are some write ups on a "grub screw" repair inside the transmission case. You cold use the search feature here and read up on them.

3. Part of the clutch could have given out, a.k.a. striped splines in the friction disk.

Unfortunately, non of them are really "defineable" until you start tearing it down. If it's only the drive shaft, that will involve the least amount of labor.
The next 2, involve removing the transmission. And IF the transmission does come out, it is the best time to lube the transmission clutch input shaft splines. Search "input shaft spline lube" to read more details.
