Difficult Downshifting - K75
« on: July 08, 2013, 11:03:30 PM »
Yup - Made it to upstate NY from Taos, and lo and behold, you have to rather forcefully step on the shifter to get down into fourth gear. The clutch cable is properly adjusted, though it IS at the limit, gonna order
A new one as soon as I can. But - I am not 100% certain that the old, stretched out cable is the issue here, as the clutch lever moves when you pull the handle with only a couple mm of play.
Hoping I am not looking at anything difficult or expen$ive here...

Release clutch and burp the throttle and pull the clutch back in before getting off the power. If it shifts good them is most likely clutch splines.

What happens is the cutch splines hang the clutch tight to the flywheel when they get dry. It's the same symptoms you get in a car when the pilot bearing goes bad.

I did the spline lube last week and was having down shift issues. Butter smooth now.

Well, if it were the clutch splines, that would be quite interesting, as I lubed them less than six thousand miles ago with that Gaurd Dog moly grease. Also, the clunks and false neutrals have improved somewhat since then, but that could be due to me developing a better touch for our beloved K's well known transmissional tempermentality ; )

When you next change the trans oil, get some Guard Dog for transmission and try synthetic gear lube.
You can't help someone who doesn't want to hear the answer.

See if the clutch is worn. Is the adjuster bolt mostly out? If so, you may be on the ends of the clutch. When i pulled mine, it was just hitting the rivets, and the clutch adjustment bolt had really only been an oil plug for a while.

Wow - looks like accessing the forum via tapatalk does not send any notifications of further posts to your email acct.
Anyhey, have not looked at the adjusting bolt yet, though when I did my spline lube about 7,000 miles ago, all looked well.
As to lubricants, I've been running both the Gaurd Dog and synthetic lube for prolly 12,000 miles now.
