K75 Gearbox Removal

Hi All

I'm about to remove the gearbox from my 88 K75c and I've read a few different versions on how to do it. Some say to support it with a jack to avoid damage, others say you only need to be careful and support it with your hands. Still others talk about using long bolts and just sliding it back a bit.

I just need to lube the clutch splines. I don't mind taking it all the way off but is it difficult to put back on? Not sure I'll be able to find suitable bolts off the shelf for that approach either.

Any input welcome, hoping some one can explain the process in simple terms. The manuals just says to take it off.

It's the weight of a large size sink garbage disposal.  You CAN hold it in one hand, but putting a jack under it for support will free both of your hands to work the bolts.  The long bolt method helps to slide the box out and not risk damaging the shafts and helps to align the bolt opening when you put back the box, but still having a jack underneath takes the stress out of the equation.

I saw where one guy built a "tranny trolley" to support it.  It looked so clever that I built one too.  It worked very well, I didn't need to remove the final drive or swing-arm as the trolley was designed to support them all.

Long bolts, as others have described, help too.

Two things I learned when I did it two winters ago:
1. the long bolts are very hard to find.  Most hardware stores don't have them.  It might be easier to find long threaded rod.
2. make sure you get all the factory bolts removed.  I banged away at it, splitting my 2x4 persuaders before I realized I missed one.

+1 on removing all the factory bolts......
You may actually have a better chance of finding long bolts, as Metric threaded rod may not be that common.

Ace Hardware.  They're prolly made in China, but they worked.
