Eliminate the Keyed Ignition Switch on 2-Valve K
« on: March 22, 2013, 01:35:21 PM »
I'm thinking about getting rid of the ignition switch and using a key-less alternative. One less key to keep track of and one less 20-year-old mechanism that will fail in the middle of nowhere.

I remember researching this last year and finding a wiring diagram for the switch's multiple connection positions, but I can't find that anywhere now :(

FYI - I permanently removed the dash pad last year and relocated the key switch to the frame near the seat, so my concerns are mechanical / electrical, not aesthetic.

Any suggestions or guidance?

I'm customizing my K75, with a mind to include keyless RFID based ignition.  I'm basing my design off of this Triumph implementation:

Technical writeup

The BMW keyswitch has all the required connections necessary for this to function.  I'm planning on retaining my keyswitch as backup and paralleling the K9 Sombra.

Have you seen the interactive schematic diagram for the 2V K-bikes at k100-forum.com to get an answer to your switch breakout question?

K100-forum is a PITA. Can't remember my username which means I can't retrieve my password or username even with a registered email address. Can't view forum attachments or downloads without logging in. PITA. Difficult to navigate forum too.

Sorry to hear that, Tim.  I clipped out the schematic of the ignition switch from the overall wiring diagram:

In Parking position, 30 (Red) is connected to 58A (Grey)
In On position, 30 (Red) is connected to 15 (Green) and 58A (Grey) is connected to 58E (Grey/Blue)

In a keyless installation, you'd want relays to emulate these connections.  Is this the information you are after or is it something else?

Is this the information you are after...

Yes, thanks!

I'm going to look around for a manual switch that will work the same.

So I was already to jump into this today and then I realized that, duh, I'll still need a key for the gas tank.

Never mind.  :loco:

Does anyone have a diagram of the wire connections on the back of the ignition switch?

I got my first BMW k100  and the Gray/Blue wire and the green wire need to be soldered back on.

This a result of P/O putting a National Cycle windscreen on and having the switch just flopping around because he also removed the dash pad and moved the bars up and back (superbike type bars) w/barbacks that DO NOT have provision for the dash pad.

I have obtained a dash pad from EBay and will need to get new bar backs.

Did anyone ever do this? Would just a regular spst switch work between red and green? Then tie the two grey wires together. This would kill the parking light option. I honestly, never used my parking lights on a bike so I really do not mind. Unless its a law I am unaware of.

My schematic is different. It shows all four wires connected together when the switch is in the on position. and red and grey connected in the parking light position.

That's a known error in the schematic, if it is the one from Haynes to which you are referring.  Check the schematic in the OEM manual for your bike, or online at http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/bvogel/K100/download/electrical/diagrams/interactive_diagrams.htm

Follow-up:

Eventually what I ended up doing was just moving the ignition switch to the side of the bike, attaching it to the frame with some clamps. The stock ignition switch wiring is plenty long enough so it was a simple job.

Been loving it there.

One More Redneck Life Hack.

Just an FYI for people who have never had side mount Key Switches.
Over time the key can work loose in the switch and decide on it's on to leave you somewhere along the last 100+ miles you just rode from your last stop.
Just like in a divorce, it takes all the other keys in your life with it.
So unless you are going to carry a spare set of keys with you, I suggest you tether your keys to the frame when you ride.
In that way you avoid the "WTF, WERE ARE MY KEYS!" moment that I have seen before.

My 87 K100 came with no keys and the gas cap lock drilled out. As far as my ignition switch goes. I tied the 2 gray wires together and bought a keyed on/off switch from Grainger's. Wired the green and red to it works fine for me. The P/O had wire nutted the grays together and also the red and green to each other. He told me he could not figure out why the battery kept dying.  Good luck,    Mc Kaylah
