One of the locks on my left side case will come out when I turn the key. What holds the lock in place, an o-ring?

Satch,
There should be a "wafer" (I think they're called) furthest away from the lock face that doesn't move down when the key is inserted.
See this excellent write-up ->

On mine, these also come out. The lock tab had been filed off (or worn off) likely when attempted to rekey.
Replacements are about $30 from the BMW dealer.

You can buy a set of six of them with two keys from the dealer for about $65. Part number is 51252303683.
