Advancing timing - do you absolutely need a timing light?

I don't know what was posted previously on this question, but when I set the timing I just align the cutout on the sensor plate with the notch in the timing chain cover where it mounts.  I'm pretty certain this is how the factory sets it, and it works well for the 4 bikes I have owned. 

That cutout is where you can see the actual timing marks.  The trouble is, to put a timing light on the marks and actually see them you need to remove the front wheel and the forks.

Back from the dead. Is there a failsafe way to reset timing back to stock?

Mine seems all out of whack and no turning of the sensor is doing anything. It’s the last puzzle to solve before I finally get my bike on the road.

Ok back in the game. Had to set TDC on cylinder 3 for my k75, cylinder 1 for you k100 owners.

You need BMW service tool 12 3 650 which is used with a test lead 12 3 651 and install the dial gauge on the appropriate cylinder, and zero it at Top Dead Centre (TDC).

Otherwise your moto will detonate!
