Alternator light on when braking after new lights installed.
« on: August 01, 2012, 12:58:24 PM »
I installed new LED light strips on my '86 K100.  I connected positive leads to the brake light lead, and negative leads to the ground on the frame.  Now, when I brake, the alternator light starts comes on but it is dim.  When I let off the  brakes, it usually goes completely away or waits a few seconds and goes away.  When I am at a stop with the brake held and try reving the engine, the light brightens.  Will this be ok? I figure it is just drawing a little too much current but since the brake lights don't run all the time, I don't think it will cause any bad issues.

How many watts total do those LEDs draw?

Just don't use your brakes and you should be fine.  (just kidding)
Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

Well, I picked them up from a electronics store for cheap in a bin of random LEDs.  They are designed for a 12v system but I don't know how much current they draw.  Probably more than I would like think.

Loose or poorly connected ground, look where you last worKed.

LED's on the F minimal battery draw. Swear the clock requires more power.

I have a couple LED lights (one running and one brake, connected the same way yours is) added by a PO and my charge indicator light does the same thing. Has done so for 40k miles. Check voltage across the battery at idle and as long as it's over ~12v... I've never had a problem!
