Have an oily bell housing so I'm replacing the O-ring - also ordered new clutch friction plate and doing a spline job. Upon inspection I noticed there's oil in the basket of the engine output shaft after removing the clutch, is this the oil the O-ring prevents from entering the bell housing? Just want to ensure I've replaced all the right seals before reassembly and I'm not forgetting one.

MODIFIED: ...also just discovered this thread about replacing the main seal, doing my reading http://www.motobrick.com/index.php/topic,1897.msg9902.html#msg9902

After reading I've surmised I now need to open my engine block to check whether the seal is leaking on the inside?  :yow how the list grows  :deal:

You will have oil there at the output shaft.
All those parts, gears, etc... inside that intermediate housing need lubrication. That's why the shaft seal and the o-ring.
Yes, the oil you have circled is what the o-ring is supposed to keep out of the clutch basket. The o-ring is supposed to keep the oil from leaking thru the splines.
Actually, if you look at your oil sight glass, if you get oil filled above the centerline of the glass, it will be right at the lip of the seal there in your picture.
I made that mistake when I did my clutch a couple of years ago. Had my sight glass over 3/4 full, pulled the basket out and out came the oil till it drained down level with the seal. Then even more came out as I replaced the seal......

Right now I'm looking for the procedure to replace the Output Shaft Seal, hopefully I don't have to open the engine, that seems like a ton of work. Sure I'm learning a ton, but I'm starting to develop shakes because I haven't riden in like three weeks. :dunno

That seal will just pull out there are no lips or clips holding it in. Get a lever or slide hammer in there and it will come out.
Clean the area carefully and put a smear of oil on the outside and inner lip of the seal and leave the outer face of the seal protruding .5 mm out of the housing. That way the new seal is using a new unused part of the clutch basket spigot to seal and not the old part the old seal used.

If the O-ring is the part that's leaking (which is usually the case) then why replace a non-leaking rear main seal?  Sorry but I just don't get it.  I'd rather be riding than wrenching.

Although I appreciate the last point, however taking into consideration you've got it opened up this far and probably don't want to go there again any time soon I'm with Rick, replace the seal now.

Thanks for the feedback Scott, Rick, FD, Rene :2thumbup: big relief the Seal simply slides out, might ask how long it would take to get one as I'm still a week 1/2 away with getting body work/paint done. Then I can put Humpty back together again. It's been a fun journey and I'm not afraid to do it all over in the winter when riding weather is crap, and I can examine next projects at a leisurely pace.

I have used an aftermarket seal which is 2mm narrower than OEM but you must specify it to be a Viton so it will take the heat. The OEM is about the same price but may take longer to get. The aftermarket should be available fron most bearing and seal places.  It is a 80 x 50 x 8mm viton.

Why not replace the transmission input seal too? ...as long as you're got it opened up this far.....
