How to 'lock' non-locking side cases?
« on: May 03, 2012, 05:28:26 PM »
So happy to have found this forum to help me answer my noob questions.
My '85 K100 has side cases with clasps (no locks) to close them and and attach to 'Z' mounts, i'm trying to figure out the best way to 'MacGyver' a locking sysytem for them?
My best idea so far, is to install 'Bungee Buddies' (A & S), one on the 'door' and one on the case and use a travel cable lock thru both to keep case locked when away from my bike. That way i also have extra attachement sites for bungees and nets to secure dry bags/luggage.
this set up will cost me $40 -$20 for 8 Bungee Buddies + $20 for 2 travel cable locks.
I've not figured out the method to keep the cases locked to the bike. (another 'Buddy' next to clasp and another travel lock thru Z mount?)

I've looked into buying locking clasps from BMW, but seems super expensive to buy and have installed (i think it was $80 per locking clasp installed X 6 Clasps needed = Ridiculous!).
I've been looking on FleaBay and Craigslist for sets of side cases, and if i can find them they're still pretty spendy (+ shipping!).
I'd be happy to trade my cases (+ cash) for someones locking set, if anybody out there has a set lying around (or doesn't need locks on 'em).

Can you attach 'adventure-style' tragkorbs to a K? on a budget? (pelican, old ammo boxes, etc)

Any advice/suggestions on how to get locking side cases on my K  for touring will be gladly accepted.
Thanks people!

Even locked to the Z racks, K system cases are VERY easy to steal.  Thinking that they're really locked to the Z racks is just an illusion.

I'd just replace the top latch on each with a hasp and use small padlocks if you're concerned about people stealing stuff from them.

I did what frankenduck suggested  because my original type 1 locks just plain wore out.  I only use a pin to lock them but could use a small padlock.  All that would to do is keep honest folks honest

PS-from some of the threads I've seen, just getting the bag off the Z rack is a security feature, lock or no lock

thanks for the input. that is probably the easiest and budget friendly method.
Chaos- thanks for the pic, and yes the i've managed to wrestle the left case off, but no amount of swearing has gotten the right case off. is there a secret handshake? (pry bar?)

To this day, I still have trouble removing my large touring bags.

Damn Reynolds touring rack is the culprit, removing the seat helps GREATLY in the process, read extremely tight fit.

On the brighter side, a "un BMW" thief would be stifled trying to steal them.

Ha, I was at a rally once where a guy was bitching and swearing struggling to mount his bags. After I showed him "how to" bought me breakfast the next morning.  :bmwsmile :bmwsmile

Be happy they are that hard to get off.  The later model bricks and boxer bags tend to just fall off on their own accord.  I had one completely vanish once - no amount of searching helped.  After a minor modification, they will NEVER come loose again.

After decades of fairly easily removing the bags on my K75, last year the right one refused to release.  All the tricks, rotated, slid back, lift, it would not come off the Z bracket.  Finally levered it off (not a pretty picture) turns out the Z bracket mounting bolts had loosened up and somehow changed the geometry of the fit.  Something worth checking once in a while.
