Fork Boots - Anybody use 'em?
« on: February 03, 2012, 11:40:46 PM »
I live in a dry, dusty environment, where gravel (and sometimes bigger things) are often spewed from under tyres of vehicles in front, or fly off of trucks coming from gravel pits in the opposite lane (ouch!).

So I'm guessing these would be a good investment, yes? (I am also trying to up my number of posts to actually reach 'novice motobricker' status) :bmwsmile

JO are the Traxxion protectors universal fit ?

website makes NO reference to diameter, so I'm assuming so.

Installed Daystar boots on the GS, damn thing overheated, forced to remove them.

Touratech makes a similar model to your Traxxion but EXPENSIVE. The only difference is, there taller in length. Cloned from Triumph aftermarket I think.

Thanks, I've been in search mode for a solution, as I pound gravel laden tarmac all the time.

The K75F has K1100 forks.

perfect fit on the rs motobrick.. can go a little larger or a little smaller in slider diameter i guess... not very tall but protects the general area of travel...

side view k75f...

Ordered a pair of the Trax protectors for the GS five minutes ago. I think they will fit OK. Plus, the price was right.

Surprised NO one ever invented a "zip lock or velcro" type boot for a motorcycle fork yet. I've seen shorter zip lock models for ATV's before in my travels.

I've used neoprene covers on my high end mountain bicycle before with dismal results. Retain moisture, swear they trap the grit worse then leaving the sliders bare naked. Granted, easily removal for inspection purposes though.

Old style R rubber boots on my K 75 whip since she was new. I kinda like the nostalgia GS image factor they portray.

FWIW, my mantra is the clean bare sliders on all my toys with Isopropyl alcohol on a regular basis.

Your biggest concern is a stone that actually chips the slider surface. Rare but it does happen occasionally. Tip, back off if another bike or cage is throwing/spitting stones in front of you if possible.

Consider additional headlight protection if run gravel tarmac with trucks. Sheet of Plexiglass cut to shape with a jig or scroll saw, attached with Velcro dots works well, cheap. BMW HL's are PRICEY !!!

All the frontal zone impact covers are designed primarily for "acidic insect leftovers" seal protection.  NOT really an issue if you wipe them down periodically.

Thanks for all the beta, everybody. DRx makes good points, the major thing around here is indeed that piece of gravel or rock from a truck that could chip or even dent the tubes. I'm likin' the plexi-headlite cover idea too.  The Traxxion solution looks good, seems it would deflect the hits where it really counts, for that coupla three or four inches above the seal, and the price is way right. Thanks Johnny  :2thumbup:

Thanks for the additional pics of the FB, FD. I dunno, I think I like the look of the c fairing best. I've always been partial to naked or nearly naked motorcycles. Just me, I suppose. I like the idea of the paralever, but always find myself suspicious of anything that involves a rubber boot. I've had to replace too many cv boots/joints over the years. Cool stuf!

The fairings are swappable in short order.  The reason I decided on the K11RS fairing is that my knees FREEZE in the cooler fall/winter/spring temps here.  I'll swap on the C fairing for fair weather use in the warmer months.  It'll now be the FBC - Frankenbike Convertible..... :2thumbup:

That boot is nothing.  They don't wear out and, if they do, are fairly easy to replace.  It ain't no CV joint.

In a dusty environ I'll think you'll be better off with the Trax units.  Johnny had boots for a while and LOTS of dusty crap built up in there.  You need to have breather holes in them and in the dust they'll suck it right in.

It also doesn't hurt to oil your forks lightly now and then.  Many times pitting is caused by rust, especially if you're near the ocean where the air is salty.  (Not an issue in Taos, I know.)

I had the same reaction to their policies.
Figured it was time to add a little protection to my bike's naked forks.  Went to the site, expected to buy, and then stopped cold when their ridiculous shipping charge came up.

Sand is able to blow in the gaiters through the tiny holes in the bottom that allow their expansion/contraction when the bike is underway?  Are you kidding me?  :loopy:

Where I live in New Mexico, we have the finest, windblown dust that permeates everything. I've wrapped up engine blocks and other
parts with plastic sheeting and duck (not franken) tape, sealed plastic bags, etc. and the shit gets IN. So I'm with FD and JO on the fork boots full o crap theory.

Got this nice little note in reply to my email to Traxxion:

Dan Anderson dan@traxxion.com2:01 PM (7 hours ago)

Charlie,
We generally use Fedex or UPS. Fedex's posted rate to your address is
$16.27, and we add a small handling charge to pay for the box and materials.

We can ship via USPS Priority mail 6-10 day service for $9.95. Just place
the order normally, and mention "ship via USPS" and I will take care of it.

Gaiters are constantly expanding/retracting as the forks move up and down while you ride.  If you're in a dusty/sandy environment with lots of sand/dirt in the air then it will get sucked in on expansion.  Not sure why that's hard to understand.

In the 48 years I've lived in an arid, semi-desert environment I have never found sand in any fork gaiters.  Seems like those are enough data points to convince me that I have other things over which to worry.

Traxxion protectors arrived in the mail this afternoon.

GIANT box, NO wonder they wanted to charge close to $19.00 for UPS shipping.

Why in the hell they required such a BIG box is a mystery to me. The actual product is small in size.

Anyway, I'll install them Saturday morning and report back. Plan is experiment with a height extension similar to the Touratech model guard.

Were supposed to get snow tonight according to the weather channel.  :dunno2:

GREAT ride this afternoon, GS is pathetically bathed in mud from head to toe. .  :bmwsmile :bmwsmile
