after 34 years... they finally failed ( odometer gears )
« on: August 16, 2026, 07:57:29 PM »
I was hoping that my '92 K75RT was some how spared the great disintegrating gear syndrome. Nope - it got me this Saturday. The green gear is missing two teeth. The others looks fine but while I'm here....

Though the 12 tooth gear looks to be just fine, it's soft. Meaning that I can deform the teeth with force but it springs back to the original shape. I assume this is not as OEM. Still, this is by far the hardest one to change. I read an older comment on another post here that the person didn't change the 12 tooth and regretted it in about 200 miles.

IP is disassembled and waiting on a set of gears via ebay.

I went thru a similar situation a couple of weeks ago.
Rebuilding my '97 bike that has been sitting for 6 years, I found out that the ODO gear cluster quit working. Mine was the small pressed gear that broke. Luckily I had 2 other clusters to get the ODO assy out of. Set the mileage, assemble the pod and was good to go.

For information's sake- www.odometergears.com sells complete sets of the gears at reasonable prices.  They may be 3D printed, but they work fine.  Including instructions for replacing the small drive gear.
