UK A2 Restriction
« on: May 03, 2025, 01:15:54 PM »
Hi all,

Im hoping someone can help me on a couple of issues. Ive tried a search but no joy.

Im in the UK and we have a 2 tier licence system here. If you are young you start with an HP restriction on your licence (known as an A2 restriction) - think its 40hp or something like that, once you qualify you then move to an unrestricted licence. There are lots of systems here for restricting a bike down to the 40hp limit so younger bikers can buy what they want, get it restricted until they get their full licence and then get the restriction removed.

I bought my 1983 K100 a couple of months ago and on going through the paperwork I found a restriction certificate which the seller didn't mention when I bought it. No info on whether it was subsequently removed or not. As I have been slowly dismantling it I've been looking for something which might have been fitted after market - possibly on the fuel or induction systems which might be the restrictor. On taking the air box above the throttle bodies off Ive found some metal washers fitted in the rubber connectors under the air box - can't see them shown on any parts diagrams - can anyone confirm if these are a std or after market part? See photo.

Secondly, on grovelling about under the bike I see a small hole in the housing under the final drive connection, and oil residue on the exterior. Should the hole have a bung or something in it? Any thoughts on the oil residue?

Im new to bike mechanics (as you can probably tell) so any thoughts or guidance is very gratefully accepted.

Those washers aren't an original part; they're restrictors.

Secondly, that small hole is not at the final drive connection; it's in the bottom of the transmission's mating surface with the engine. The engine connects to the transmission at that end via its intermediate housing. That hole serves the purpose of showing when either the transmission seals or engine rear seal or output shaft o-ring are leaking. The side stand is connected to four holes on the underside.

The swing arm is connected by bearings to each side of the transmission; the right side connection is indicated by the red arrow. A drive shaft within the swing arm connects the transmission with the rear drive.

Thank you Laitch, much appreciated. Ive ordered new rubber connectors between the airbox and TB so will toss those with the washers in. They are pretty beaten up anyway.

Thx also for the comments on the weep hole. Give the oil residue I guess something in there is leaking  :(

Downloaded the manual - should be some interesting reading

Smell the weeping oil. If it smells like sulfur (rotten eggs) then it's gear oil coming from the transmission. If not then it is motor oil from a leaky clutch nut O-ring or rear main seal.
Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.
