Cannot remove clutch assembly
« on: April 07, 2025, 03:06:21 PM »
Hi,  Can you please help. I need to remove the clutch assembly to fit a new friction plate but after removing the 6 bolts I cannot lever the assembly out. It's stuck on the engine spline. I've seen on youtube a guy levering it off with a screwdriver but I cannot get it to budge. I don't want to bend any plates.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

regards,

Justin

The housing halves are aligned by three dowel pins.  It sounds like the housing is stuck on them.

You need to pull the assembly perfectly straight out to avoid binding on the pins.  You need to work slowly going around the assembly working a little at a time until the pins let go.  Easy does it, patience is the way to go, maybe with some heat from a heat gun to expand the metal to help let go of the pins.

To get the clutch plates apart I use a 5 1/2" Mini pry-bar around the edges. (7" pry-bar is too big)

Vaughan 222 or Titan 11505

Use the right end between each pair of bolt holes and twist it to the side:

Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

Laitch, Frankenduck and the Mighty Gryphon,
Thanks very much guys for your quick help!
I'll get that tool and and work my way round slowly. It seems to be stuck fast on all 3 dowel pins.
I think if it had been like in Chris Harris' video it would of been obvious as there was some play.

Cheers!

I put a light coat of anti-seize on the three pins to make it easier if I ever have to pull it apart again.

That silicone on the diaphragm spring is pretty stupid. You're supposed to put grease on the ring inside it, not adhesive.

Here's some more on doing the clutch without BMW special tools:

The clutch assembly is off at last!!
I heated it, and took time going around the edge with that pry bar. I even doused penetrating oil all over to try and get to the dowel pins.
The clutch was being renewed so no problem with the friction plate. It eventually popped loose on one pin and it gave up the fight.
I'll definately be putting a smidge of copper grease on those.
Thanks again for all your help. You guys are the best!
